Ooops, I did it again...

jdos, Steve Gandy's selling the Zeiss 28 for $885 (that's a lot less than their price at B&H and KB Camera). Add some $185 for the hood and you still come out winning.

Also KEH has a nice Elmarit 28/f2.8 (capless, hoodless) for $885 (or so).

Rover... you're right. The 75/f1.4 has two versions (according to Sartorius's book), and sometimes it seems an interesting focal length...

Well Francisco, it was the price that attracted me but when the lens arrived it had obviously been used a lot, and I mean a lot. Luckily the build quality on these things is unbelievable and the glass is absolutely pristine - I think a filter was used on the front - the first thing I did was test it both at closest focus and infinity on both my M bodies and both were perfect. 🙂 These lenses are now going (used) for around $800 on eBay so I am well satisfied. I took some shots with the lens on my my M7 on Friday and I may post one or two in the M7 thread later if I have the time to scan.

Good buy, have this lens myself and I´m happy with it.
Sharp , easy to focus , and 49 mm filter is quite easy to get.
With some 400 film 2,8 and 15th sec everything is perfect for low light photography, just be careful with the espresso 😀

jdos, sorry to hear about your trouble... I went through something similar a while ago, when I backed up against the garage door. Gotta get a new door, and also fix the car. It almost wiped out all my savings and gone with it were my Bessa R dreams for Xmas of that year...

Hmmm. I might be able to work something out. Still considering the Zeiss. I can get the Zeiss 28mm with hood for the same price as a used Elmarit.

Now, which takes prettier pictures?

jdos, you and I have to meet, shoot the same subject and compare the photos, 'cuz my Elmarit (slightly sick, as you know) came in today. In fact, I was on my way to my office when I saw the "brown" truck. Stopped, asked him if he had something for me, he said yes, got the box, rode bike home, got the lens out, put in on my Leica and rode my bike to campus with that thing around my neck.

In other words... I'm a pretty happy guy. 😀

Yeah, I spoke with Igor to see if he had others. he said the separation was very, very small- it sounds like you got a great lens at a great price!

I've not yet decided. Sherry's got a Canadian Elmarit in wonderful shape, serviced, and so forth but it's for nearly the same $$ as a new one with hood from Mr. Cameraq.
What's nice about the one that Sherry has is that it's in New York, which I can go and play with. I actually wanted to do an involved trade with the ASPH Summilux she has, the Elmarit, and my Noctilux... But she sold the ASPH. Feh. We'll see... We'll see.

Yes, the separation is so small compared to the case of my Summicron 90, that I'm really wondering if it really needs to be fixed now. I am very careful with my stuff, but then, no matter what you do, for no apparent reason, your stuff will eventually fall apart because, unlike us, human beings, it has no regenerative powers.

In any event... Joe, the lens is <swallowing hard for fear of sounding silly> a handsome piece of equipment. Granted, it's not perfect (half of the base of the tab is missing and there are some minute scratches somewhere in the focusing ring), but the front element looks pristine, has the singular purple glare of Leica glass (funny, Konicas are greenish), and it's surprisingly light. Igor packed it well, almost too well... It came super isolated in plastic and bubble wrap, in a box wrapped in cellophane.

This seems to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Now... I have a roll of supermarket film in my camera, and will see to get it developed over the weekend. Let's hope I can scan some prints soon. I just want to get used to thinking about the entire viewfinder fitting in a picture, and also want to get used to the fast focusing the tab allows.

Decidedly worth the wait. Jdos, you're next! 🙂

And when you announce your purchase, I'll raise my Guinness to the Elmarit brotherhood. 😀

Igor lives a spit away. If you ever need an extra set of eyes on something you are interested from him (and he DOES have some pretty stuff!) let me know and I'll take him (he'll take me, usually) to coffee at a book store local to him. It's a 15 minute motorcycle ride for me. If I want to look at a particular piece of gear, he'll bring it. Heck, it's how I got my Contax IIIa, Noctilux, 135 Elmarit, among others.
I'll see him at a show on Sunday, too.
 
So, jdos, we're partners in crime... err, ownership of an Elmarit 135/2.8?

I have one, first version (focusing ring half knurled, series VII filter size). It fell on my lap by sheer chance, with a name engraved on the barrel and the goggles out of alignment. For $40, Don Goldberg aligned the goggles and now it's a nice, spiffy and surprisingly fast telephoto.

I'll take your word on gear from Igor's store! 🙂
 
Mine I got from Igor- it wasn't terribly expensive, and the eyes were fine. It looked great in the shop. A couple hours later, I got all the smoking-grime off of the optics...

The longer lenses seem to suffer more from hard use- those that use 'em, use 'em often. I have to say, when I went on vacation, I brought it along, with the AA 90, and I used the 135 FAR more often (sad to say!)

I think I got an Elmarit 28mm with the finder in the box for $1,000. We'll see.
 
There was a time this last summer that I really got into long glass. I took my 'cron 90 to Costa Rica and lamented having left the Elmarit behind, because these are nice, long lenses that let you do what you cannot do with long SLR glass: shoot at fast shutterspeeds. Hence, they become addictive.

Igor has a Summilux in chrome... Forget it! I can't do any more of this lens buying all the time... 🙁

Again, I'll take your word on this offer of yours. Only... it's going to take some time...
