Opinions on Leica Elmarit M 28mm f2.8 asph

How does it compare to the tiny CV 28/3.5. If I remember correctly Sean Reid had nothing but praise for this small lens

Love mine. But I do think it is a bit too contrasty. Compactness is my priority. What I see of the Summicron suggests to me that that is really special.

Had the lens for a while and sold it. Was using it 90% of the time for B&W and found it to be too contrasty for my liking, and I didn't care much for the bokeh. Nice and small though, and sharp as a tack.

Great to see all the positive responses in this thread. It's the one lens I'd want for my Leica('s). Currently got a 35mm and 50mm Summicron, both v4: gotta love that focusing tab.
Size is one of the most important factors for me when buying a lens. For me, my 50mm Cron is about as big as I'd want to go - and with the hood it's way too big for my liking.

I was/am still looking for a nice second-hand of this lens, but can't really justify it and I honestly don't really need it. I don't really suffer from GAS, but I feel like this would be the last lens I'd ever want for my kit.

This is a lens I would really like to have because it always gets great reviews.

I bought a copy of the Voigtlander Ulton ASPH 29/1.9 LTM some time ago and have always enjoyed the results. Just not sure if spending the extra monies for the Leica would be worth it, although I am sure I would enjoy the smaller size.

Good luck with your decision.

I had the pre-asph. Elemarit a couple of years ago. I bought it used when being in Japan for while and my only Leica lens at the time a 2/50 Summicron wasn't really suitable for Tokyo cityscape.

Somehow I never really warmed up to using that lens. I'm not sure why. This was my biggest concern about the new Q ... BUT the new 28/1.7 asph is a stunning performer. Excellent performance across the field and lovely bokeh. Only caveat of this lens ...it comes with a Q permanently attached, not too big of deal though😀

I had one. Used it with my MP. Very sharp, but I found it to be too contrasty, and I didn't quite like the bokeh either. Sold it off after 2 months, went back to my Elmarit-R with M adapter, which is also contrasty but has a more pleasing overall rendering to my eyes. Thought I'd save up for the 28mm Summicron, but got the G-Rokkor and now I am happy. The G-Rokkor is even thinner and lighter than the Elmarit, but only opens up to f/3.5.

In case you're intrigued. These are from the 28mm Elmarit-R. I used it on my M7 on aperture priority mode, with a Fotodiox R to M adapter. Zone focusing is rather easy on a 28mm lens, and the M7's AE makes it a brilliant point and shoot. Heavy and big, but no more so than a 50mm 1.5 Voigtlander.

A great lens, very nice for street work, if that's your thing and you like the more dramatic looking kind of street work at least. I would consider one myself but prefer a 35mm for that kind of work. BTW, I see you (OP), are in Bangkok like me

Check out my very Bangkok based photography website at chromacomaphoto.com, it's all on film.
