orange filter on J8

Filter aficionados – A Jupiter 8 I acquired a short time ago came with a filter attached, orange in color (described as “orange/blue” on one website). The identifying letters/numbers on the side are: “OC12” and “Salyut” (assumed maker spelled in Russian, thanks Natalia! at www.camerafool.com for the translation).

Could some of you good people help me out with determining the best use of this filter, i.e. –
- conditions for using the filter?
- purposed effect of the filter?
- any particular film best suited for the filter?
- etc.?

Also, do you know of any good websites/threads that give short explanations of diverse FSU filters and uses?

How about your favorite FSU filter?

I’m getting ready to go shoot a roll just to test drive the filter -- and was just curious what to expect. 😕 Thanx.

I have OC-12 (Oranzhevyi Svetofiltr - Orange Lightfilter) as well. Works the same way as any other orange filter: helps to bing out contrast on BW material. Eats a stop.

Basically a piece of toned glass, non-coated. Expect flare when shooting against light sources.

The attached image was done with OC-12 and Jupiter-8M, on Fomapan 400 pushed to 800.

Okay, I've never used filters before. So, as orange goes, the darker the orange, the more yellow/red rays blocked [and making lighter areas] while the blues become darker -- therefore higher contrast.

On the FSU filters of this type ("OC"), does a higher number indicate darker orange? An OC14 would bring out slightly more contrast on b&w and OC8 would bring out less?
