Methylene Chloride works fine on Leica Vulcanite! New covering tonight (fingers crossed) along with the first coat of orange on brass!

to remove the vulcanite just put the shell in the oven for a few minutes at 225 degrees or so. then it peels right off. 🙂

That is looking fine so far. Hope there isn't too much difference between covering and plates.

BTW, at work we used to use Lime Kool Ade in a sonic bath to remove nickle plating in about 2 hours or less.

It took about an hour to strip the Nickel off in the heated B929 bath.

The Orange of the top plate is slightly more vibrant than the leather covering, I chose a lighter color for the camera to really make the leather stick out.

Thanks for all the comments!

Seriously though, I bet it'll look brilliant once it's all together.
Time to get an orange-brown neck strap from Aki-Asahi 🙂

Wet sanding with 600,

Going to slap a final coat of orange,

Then finish with wet 1500,

Before sealing it up with a polish.

At this point it has a very worn in look, lots of edge brass showing, but that's just part of the process. Although I ultimately want this kind of brassing I would feel a bit lazy leaving it like this instead of clocking the time in for an authentic patina.

Let's talk,

Does anyone have questions?

Maybe you have a project or inspiration you would like to share?

Tell me about a look you like! What would you do with a bare brass IIc?

I have an Agfa Super Silette I was going to do a black paint project with, but it hasn't materialized for any of a number of reasons.

The match between your plates and coverings is very nice, and will look just fine when complete. Going through my archive, I found a photo of a Leica M with orange coverings, and it was alright, but one done completely in Pepto Bismol pink was what I considered stepping over the line. Any other shade than that is okay by me.

With a bare brass IIc I would make sure to get a coat of clear on it as soon as possible.
