Looking for photos of the original hood/shade for the late 1950`s Canon f1.8 35mm lens, does anyone have one they could take detailed photos of, or if anyone has one they would like to part with let me know, I just acquired one of these lenses recently and I want to get the proper hood for it - THANKS

I have a couple of old Canon catalogs (late sixties) and no hoods are listed for either the 35mm f2 or the 35mm f1.5, in fact in one of the catalogs it indicates, for both lenses, "built-in lens hood", by which I guess it means that the front element is deep enough not to require a hood. I think you can assume that the same applies to your 35mm f1.8. Of course, you may use a generic hood if you want.

I have seen test shots with my lens without a hood and it performed wonderfully in a very low light situation, I have a 40mm Series VII screw on Canon ring, that has a 1/4 INCH partial hood ring screwed onto it
(maybe it`s something someone did put together for a 35mm?)
......so that`s what I`m going to try first......and see the results

I just recently saw a hood labeled W-50 (WIDE 50MM) for the f1.5 35mm and another labeled W-50-A (what lens is that for?)
*both clamp on*

Surprising that they didn`t make a hood for the f1.8, when they made hoods for all other 35mm`s

What`s the filter size of the f1.8? (I`m still waiting for mine`s coming with my Canon 7s on Monday/Tuesday) Next Week :)

Hmmmmm ahhhhh ok, the S-50 was the original hood for the f1.4 right? but the W-50 is slimmer and trimmer :)

What`s with the W-50-A?

Also the f1.8 is 40mm OK?
I`ll just stick with that Series VII 40MM screw on ring I have with the half ring screwed onto the top of it, that might be enough to knock out some glare

The Canon RF numbers and symbols can be confusing sometimes, but it`s fun getting all the right gear together, I enjoy putting together and using the Canon gear almost more then my Leica stuff - what do I have to do? change my name to
Canon Tom or something else soon.....hahahahha!

MORE PRACTICAL for my major workload with the PinUp business*

I can`t wait for this lens, I`ve seen it`s performance on a RD-1 and it was amazing, gave that "vintage glow" with just enough sharpness at wide open to make it count - I`ll be shooting it alot with 400 ASA B&W mounted on my Canon 7s

*Those two are coming in the mail on Monday/Tuesday next week*
(I traded two of my Half Race Leica`s *for restoration* for the lens and camera)

W-50 I believe would indicate it is a hood for a wide angle lens with 48mm threads, as the 50/1.4 has 48mm threads. It also can be a hood which crossed over for use with early Canon SLR lenses too.

Someone needs to complete a comprehensive study of Canon lenses and accessories. We have the bodies covered, the other stuff needs attention.

Tom, the Canon 35/1.8 accepts 40mm filters. I have not noticed any vignetting with standard width filters.

That's what Peter K. is about to do... he's publishing the first of 3 book, covering the lenses sometime in the near future. Last I heard, he was working with the layout artist, so the book has been written. A bunch of us have been waiting a long time. The other 2 books are planned to cover cameras and accessories. There are still lots to cover on the cameras, as its been some tim since Peter D. did his book on those.

I'm hoping its very soon.... and Peter K. isn't taking the summer off (since he's in Australia).

Here`s the f1.8 35mm on my "user" Canon 7s

with the Series VII 40mm hood ring and that screw-on half ring.....hoping that this will be an ok setup and won`t obstruct the edges of the lens shooting wide open at f1.8

- we`ll see what happens come this weekend.....

Hi Tom,
the hood you need for your 1.8/35 is the Canon 42mm A. Mine doesn't vignette with the 2/35 or the 1.8/35 even though it is only marked for 1.8/50 or 2.8/35.
The W-50 hood is perfect for the 1.5/35 even though I found mine as part of the 35mm supplementary lens kit for the forgettable EX-EE SLR. The S-50 is the correct hood for the 1.4/50 Canon.
Sorry to say my Leica IIIc no.391xxx isn't for sale unless I find a better one.
