OT: be glad you aren't fly fishermen (and women)

You guys should all live here, or at least come visit. It's fly fishing heaven. A few friends have encouraged me to take it up but it never grabbed my interest -- I grew up with a different style of fishing (lazy, sleepy bass/walleye fishing in an old smelly boat 😀). The space I occupy out here is being wasted!!!

I am a saltwater (third coast) fly fisherman and just sold my Kayak, great but expensive hobby. BTW, anyone want to buy a 9wt. Sage RPLX 3 pc., brand new still in the bag. I got this one as a warranty for another I broke and never used it.

Building rods is also a great pastime, I have built a couple with simple wraps but have seen some that are works of art!

Tom, I've got two T&T rods that I absolutely love.. next favorite is a my Winston JWF.. then a brand new Diamondglass.. also a custom IM6 and a Lamiglas Brush Creek pack rod that I've never used in the two years I've had it.. the rod I bought yesterday was an Orvis HLS 6wt.. never been used, apparently.. the thing about rods is that even a cheap rod will get the job done by a competent caster.. but a quality rod just makes it easier.. less work equals more fun, IMO

and I agree about the waders.. I've been using an economical pair of Orvis Clearwater breathables for 4 years.. just this season, the neoprene feet both started seeping water like they were sponges.. I sent them back to Orvis on Monday.. I expect them to be replaced under warranty.. we'll see.. but my vest is a Simms Guide Vest that I love.. I'll recommend Simms gear to anyone

gns, I kinda wonder what that old-timer meant by his comment.. seems he was acknowledging some problem, but was pointing out you couldn't blame it on the gear? LOL

Paul, I'll definitely have to check out that Minolta Weathermatic Dual-35.. sounds like something I could use!

On this thread we all have rods, we all have cameras so lets put up some non fish shots taken while on the water (note the turn of phrase 'on the water') I seem to have ruffled some 'feathers' , pardon the pun, regarding streams and not including ponds or the saltchuck.

I fish all those too, so what about a photo project closing out on Aug 31st. Show anything about a flyrod / fishing related , surf, sunsets on a pond, ducks on a river, friend asleep on the shore or in a boat with gear, a tackle still life, what ever but something which isn't fish shots.

Many of us don't fish solely for a fish, there are other reasons to be out there. The shots could show why. Any interest?

It doesn't take a lot of imagination to equate flyfishing and photography. You could easily describe someone like Garry Winogrand "Wading "up 5th avenue (his Madison river) in search of the lunkers. Wait, maybe that should be Madison Avenue.

I'm looking at the water and I'm salivating. If you are in Wisconsin I assume that this is a stream in the Driftless Region. Mighty fine fishing there. I have to do it this year or next.

Jan, no it's not the driftless region.. it's the Rush River.. northwestern part of the state, about an hour from Minneapolis (but still in Wisconsin).. it's a spring creek in a bit of a canyon and IMHO it beats the driftless region for scenery and trout.. I caught 5 trout that day, the average size was 16" (and honestly, I'm not that good of a fisherman)

the Driftless Area is also very nice.. about 3 hour drive for me, as opposed to 4.5 hours to the Rush.. I tend to split up my time evenly between the two.. but it puts a lot of miles on my car

Well I am not into fly fishing (to tell the truth I have never tried it), but I am an avid fisherman, both bait and lure. I usually fish salt water in the estuaries and beaches. I have done a small amount of freshwater fishing over the years, but salt is where my action lies.

Unfortunately I don't have as much time as I used to have for fishing. Where I used to live was only 5 minutes walk away from a nice saltwater lake, and a bit further was an awesome inlet that was great for bream, flathead and whiting. Now the closest fishing place is not a good place to fish, and anywhere decent is a fair hike to get to.

I can relate to that, Heath. I work about 5 minutes away from some well-known steelhead fishing, but I'm not into that at all, either.

Very pretty water, and a great shot too. it has a great feel. Is this water stocked or wild? I hope it's wild and special regulation. It gives everyone a chance to catch a fish even if they are tough to catch.

I think I may start a thread anyway for 'art shots' of fishing water. Salt, fresh, still , running.

BTW : Regarding your icon, Half of Christmas Story was shot about 10 blocks from where we lived in Toronto, The other half was in Cleveland. Most of the school and neighbourhood were in Toronto.

Jan, the water is stocked, altho the trout are reproducing there very well, too. It's mostly browns with some brookies in certain spots. I don't think it's special regulations, but I don't remember ever seeing any non-fly fishers there, and just about everyone practices C&R these days. Other places in the state claim to have more fish per foot of water, but I've never been on any public water that had as many trout as this river. Granted, there are still a lot of rivers in northern Wisconsin I haven't even gotten to yet.

I'm a fly fisherman too 😀 But my father is the fly fishing junkie, I just use his extensive collection of gear 🙂
