OT: City break suggestions in Northern Europe

Ferries are nice and I prefer them to planes. Look into Harwich to Esberg, and Portsmouth to Bilbao, and Plymouth to Santandar. Typically one night on board. Cinema, disco, cheap eats, posh eats etc...

Not at all like ferries used to be. More mini-criuses.

I havent been to many places you mentioned, but I would recommend eastern europe. I think there must be lots of interesting places, may be some leftovers of the soviet times, interesting rundown buildings, contrast between the old and the new. I was in Prague and thought it was pretty exciting. Tallin might be even more exciting and definitely not so touristy. I live in a beautiful medieaval town of Lüneburg in North Germany. Its a great lil city, but its so darn clean! Houses that are 500 hundred years old look almost new! In some way thats a bit boring. You'll never see that in countries like france or spain. There the houses that are 100 years old look like they are at least a 1000. That has alot of character.

How about Reykjavik, Iceland. It's only 3 hours from London. Check out Icelandexpress for cheap flights from Stanstead Icelandexpress
Icelandair also fly twice everyday from Heathrow, but are usually a little more expensive.

Reykjavik is plenty dark and rainy this time of year and getting darker. The weather is unpredictable, but usually not extremely cold (-5 to +5°C in winter). You can warm up in the excellent warm swimming pools all over Reykjavik or in the Blue Lagoon. The nightlife is considered very lively on fridays and saturdays in downtown Reykjavik if you are interested in that.
There is very photogenic volcanic landscape within an hours drive all around Reykjavik. The old part of Reykjavik and neighbouring town of Hafnarfjörður is beautiful and nice to walk around.
The worst part is it's an expensive city, especially the alchohol. I don't know about price of hotels or guesthouses.

Tourists seem to like Reykjavik. I've lived in Reykjavik all my life so my feelings about the place are mixed.
But I think you should check it out on the internet.
