OT: Crash Course in Swedish

It is even hard on us danes speaking to our swedish neigbours
when we ask for a box (kasse)we get a bag(kassa)
when we ask for toffee we get a bon bon
when we ask for a Cola we get a Toffee
when swedes ask us to have sex they mean to ask us if we should play ball
talking it easy in danish means having fun in swedish
it goes on and on and causes a lot of misunderstanding
many danish and swedes talk english to each other
I spent most summers in my childhood in sweden and don have a problem understanding the language - besides in the 70 ties most danes in eastern denmark could only wacth one danish tv channel and two swedish tv channels so back then we understood our brothers better.
Now with satelite disk recievers etc and 100 of channels people don get a word they are saying.
I like the list of all the words that are spelled the same with different meaning
can not figure out why they did not make different spellings of sex and six
apart from that I have a lot of respect to the swedes - hasselblad, saab, volvo and best of al the "allamans rät" (sorry if misspelled) - meaning that you can almost move around anywere without tresspassing as long as you do not harm the nature and do not go to close to buildings - you can even camp out anywere as long as it is only for a night - they also have great fishing waters - and real nature - in denmark we don have nature we have parks and large parks and larger parks (by some called woods)
Muppet show swedish will not bring you far in sweden but it was quit funny

It's the same for us Swedes, it can be almost impossible to understand someone from Jylland (the large western part of Denmark for you non-europeans). The worst part is when you try to buy something in Denmark (I live 20min from Helsingør, in Helsingborg) and they ask for "fire og halvfjerds" or something like that. 😛

And our tongues make twister macaroni when we try to say 77 i swedish - schjuyti - schjuyi - how do you write that phoeneticly?

Talking about the western part of denmark (the entire country is only about 350 x 550 km)
when I go there on a job I always try to avoid asking for directions - I simply do not get a word they are saying soon as I leave the larger towns - it is like: a wuao a owow ow wow wow - makes no sense to me at all.

Any way I see Markus lives in Jönkökping - not more then 60 km upstream the Nissan river from were my house hides in the forrest and you live in Helsingborg - I live about 10 km from Helsingør in Humlebæk - That is one of the things I like about the internet - you are on a forum started by this great guy called Jorge on the other side of the atlantic and you end up talking to someone that is close eneugh to be your neighbour

all the best
Ruben

Swedish

I began Swedish in college, at the UW (University of Washington). I took classes for a year. Actually, the syntax structures are very similar to English. I found it easier to learn than Spanish. And Stockholm is a great city for photos. I'd love to take the R3A there for a month. Summer is awesome there - take slide film. Winter is very. . . wintery. And dark.
