It's unusual poll I guess. It has no connection to rangefinders, so OT slightly :> at least it has some connection to photography. First of all - situation: you are touring Jerusalem Old City. Pessah/Passover time, narrow streets of Old City, crowd of locals, tourists and piligrims, all languages of this world heard. Right there, in the Old City market place, some person approaches you. "Wanna buy flash for your camera?" he asks and shows brand-new looking (and sure working) Metz 54mz-4/M2. You have a classic camera with you. "How much?" you ask, and answer is "Cheap - just $40". What is your answer?

I thank him politely and walk away as fast as I can before his accomplice picks my pocket.

If I fail my saving throws I'll just take a snapshot of them as they make their getaway.

OK, this scenario is possible (though Israel suffers less from pickpockets than many other countries I think). Btw I didn't even think of this possibility :>

Hummm, buying bits and pieces of what might once have been part of a working photo-journalists kit, in or near a war zone. Nah, I'd walk away.

I wore my camera case [an slr telephoto case that held just the camera and lens] around my waist and there was a metal loop on the strap at my back.

Now I wore this all over Israel, but as I left the old city at the Damascus gate three young kids walked up behind me and just as one of them reacched out and began to cut the loop with a pair of wire cutters [the other two were setting up to grab the camera and block my path] they realized that I was not at the end of our group, but in the Middle and a couple of very large friends were in grabbing range of them :p

of course tourists are a bigger target for this sort of thing than the average Iraeli, but then the average Israeli is well armed :D

as for the question, probably not, but I would not buy a watch that way in New York City either ;)
