OT: Fast K mount 50mm?

Hey all, I have a young friend who is learning photography. I gave her a K1000 a year ago for christmass and her current fastest lens is a 50/2 SMC Tak (she also has a 35/2.8 SMC and a cheap 3rd party 35-135). (Gave her a bunch of the Walgreen's 200 this year... 😉 )

Now, to put it mildly, this is a very nice lens. However, I'd like to find a good & cheap, yet faster, 50 for her to learn the tradeoffs between speed, available light and DOF. Anyone got some good ideas? Serious emphasis on cheap here folks; I spent $25 on the whole system last year and would prefer to be as near to that cheap a**ed a bast*** this time as well :bang: 😛

Thanks,

William

Methinks a 50/2 is fast enough to illustrate DOF. However, I seem to recall from my Pentax days that there is a 50/1.4 (or thereabouts) SMC which is highly regarded.

I agree with Richard... and if you're a truly cheap so-and-so, then why spend money unnecessarily for another lens of the same focal length? 🙂 FWIW, last August I paid my local repair guy $70 for a like-new K-mount 50mm f/1.4 SMCP.

Hi,
Pentax did a nice 1.7 but that is hardly any different. They also did a very good 1.4 and a 1.2. The latter tends to go for silly money and I doubt you will get a 1.4 for less than about $60. You can easily play DOF with the F2 and it is a well regarded lens.

Ok, that's all about what I figured, but it never hurts to ask. Especially if your unsure and have a couple of pints in you 😀

Thanks all,

William

you might be able to get a 50mm f1.4 screw mount and an adapter OR the 135mm screw mount lens goes for a song, you might pull off the 135mm+adapter for $25

no if you are interested in a 135mm f3.5 screw mount lens preset, TAIKA DORYT with a name and ss# etched into the barrel, send me a PM with an address and I will send it to you. You will still need an adapter

but the price is right
