OT: Google Earth

I have been playing with this for the past few days, and I think it is waaaay cool. Sorry if this is old news, but for those who don't know, it is a program that gives you what appears to be a satellite photo (well, not so OT then) of the earth, and allows you to zoom in to any address in the world.

You can use it to see where everyone else lives, or use it to follow the 'Pass the RF' camera!!

Google Earth is available for free download here

Google Earth was formerly know as Keyhole; they were purchased by Google recently. Currently it's free to use; it may not stay that way. I agree that it is WAY cool... be careful downloading it at work, or you might never get any work done! :D

Looks neat. I'll have to check it out when they get a Mac or Solaris client available.

Thanks Ray. This is an amazing stuff. I can see my litthe hometown, heh!
Really cool to check a place like Paris, or to "look into" the Etna. As BJ says, it will take a lot of time to get enough of it:)

I played with it last week, I think it is being updated regularly all over the world: not everywhere is the highest resolution. In the US most of the addresses are known, in Holland only 'Amsterdam' is known. Still, amazing!

It's a great tool for the kids to learn geography. They got a kick out of seeing Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon in 3D (click on the white map pin) ;)

laptoprob - not everywhere. My hometown region was not updated since a few years:))
but that's 'wild east' so i don't wonder, lol

I CAN SEE MY HOUSE FROM HERE!!!!!!

sorry, had to be said

Really though, it's a cool use of the internet. I love airphotos, did an 8 month stint in an airphoto library/printing facility, and well, I have a nice little collection now!

Im waisting my time for a couple of day now with google earth, IMHO it's cooler than Nasa WorldWind :)

Already found the University in Matanzas and the street where I lived, then.

Yep onno the airplane and its shadow:D I went around a bit more and tried to find similar ones around other airports but couldn't. It's unique!:D

The tenerife region also looks cool. And Iceland. And the big rush around Hong Kong:) And i've found the Kilimanjaro already. But not the machu pichu!
LOL, i'm like a kid. SHould go to sleep now.

Okay, for you AA fans...

Ray, thanks for this link! It is very cool but my computer is a bit old and google-earth is slightly too much for it so I had to uninstall it :(
When I upgrade this P.O.S. machine I'll get it again!

Can't run it on my mac just yet :(

Another cool google app is google map which can be found at http://maps.google.com/

Satellite imagery features over here too. A nice alternative to mapquest as the maps and directions are much easier to read.

It's not! Go to Calgary, AB. Find the airport in the northeast part of town, and you'll see an airplane making a northbound approach, shadow and all...

Sorry to burst your bubble, dude... ;)

Here are the coords, to save you some time:
51° 5'1.49"N
114° 1'16.05"W

The satellite data used in Google Maps is the same data in Google Earth. It's just that Earth has a much more powerful user interface.
