Way off topic, but I need help ....

Can someone tell me if it is possible to turn OFF the macromedia flash player that keeps running ads in every page I visit? I'm using Firefox 1.0.7 for Mac OS X. Many thanks in advance!

Tom,

Sounds like you should run AdAware or HijackThis if you're getting ads popping up on EVERY page.

It could be that you've got some spyware on your system.

AdAware can be found at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ It used to have a free download but I think those were beta versions.

HiJackThis can be found at http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,23258,00.asp and has an updated file from July 2005.

AdAware and HiJack This both work as spyware removal tools.

Good Luck

Tom, just outta curiosity, why don't you use Safari? I realize it's a personal preference, but I tried Firefox a while back and felt it didn't offer anything beyond what Mac gives you with their browser.. of course, I don't do much customizing, and I hear Firefox is the king for that

but on the other hand, Safari has "Block Pop-Up Windows" as a standard feature.. I still get the occasional pop-up, but rarely

Hi Joe,

I used to use Safari quite a bit, then when Firefox came out, I moved to Firefox because it was faster and seemed more versatile. (ie being able to block images from individual sites etc.). Just also liked the layout better on Firefox (pure subjective). I'm sure Safari is just fine.

Just tried ADBLOCK extension from Firefox ... wow, works like a charm. Thanks all. I will give those other spyware related programs a look see as well 🙂

Spyware

Spyware

Hmm, as far as I know, there is no (known) spyware circulating around for Mac OS X, and those apps that have been linked to are for Windows only.

Popups are a bigger problem nowadays than viruses. They can litterally bering a computer to a standstill. Get AdAware. Microsoft has a beta anti spyware program but it seldom seems to block anything and AdAware still finds stuff.

BTW: The reason Macs don't suffer from this sort of thing is probably because the user base is so small the popup folks don't feel it's worth their time to program to those machines. Linux users had the same claim but that OS is popular enough now it is starting to have spyware issues.

Ya know.. I'm a bonehead.. my head is still swimming from lack of rest this past weekend.. I totally neglected the MAC OS information in Tom's original post.. my apologies..

Tom, I'm using OSX and Firefox. Curiously I don't have the problem you describe. I think the general comments about spyware might be the answer. Still your last post shows you have solved the issue. Computers, software... go figure.
