Aki Asahi is now selling eyepiece patches for FSU cameras!!!! Now those of us (like me) can go shooting our Kiev's without fear of ruining our brand new spectacles!!

Great. I bought some Leica sized ones for when I had a canon 7 (which worked well) and have been modifying the leftovers for my zorki 1. Great to know that there is now an easier option.

This is big news, every time I've tried to make some homemade ones they ended falling soon, hope this ones will last more.

Even though the only scratch on my new glasses comes from a G-III Canonet :bang:
 
I've been using hardware store "rubber" O-rings.
Rough up the back side of the ring before using
any good contact-type cement. Black automotive
trim cement works very well, but is messy to use.

Clarification... the O-rings go around the outside of the eyepiece,
so take your camera with you to the hardware store to find the
diameter, and the thickness you need, to fit your individual camera.

I got some of the patches from Aki Asahi a couple weeks ago. They work very well. For the price much easier than other methods I have tried. I got some for my Zorki and Kiev cameras. Hightly recommended.

I just bought one also. At $3.95 for 3 why not? Id spend more in gas getting to Home depot to look for something to make one with.
 
Have any of you guys ever heard of GLASS lenses? Out of habit, my sunglasses are a separate pair (not always terribly convenient, but so what?) . I always get them made with glass lenses. It takes a little longer to get them back, but again - so what?

Of course, once you're up to trifocals, like I am, you won't notice a couple more scratches!!
 
I've been cutting similar circles from sheets of adhesive-backed felt found in the crafts department at Wal-Mart. I use the black felt and cut it to use on my Imarect and Brite-Line finders as well as the eyeports on my Leica IIIa and IIIf RD. Mine are not quite as neatly cut, but are quite serviceable and are very cheap. A hole punch will make the center hole, while the outer shape can be cut using small, sharp scissors. The shape can be drawn out on the white backing sheet using a ball point pen. Good Luck.

Trust me, a Kiev will scratch glass lenses just as badly as plastic ones. Back when I shot my Kiev more regularly, along side some Nikons that also scratched my glass lenses (FM2s, I think), I ended up using a pair of older eyeglasses while shooting in order to preserve my lenses. The shooting glasses ended up with a fairly deep pitting from the Kiev.

For neater circles/holes, try a set of cheap H.F. punches. I've got to cut a couple felt gaskets for two Yashica RFs latter on and the small set I've got comes in handy for just that sort of project. I punched out thin brass covers with foam fillers for a cameras' motor-drive mounting points that had lost their screw-caps, and used bits of duct tape to secure them. I am very happy with the results.

My bi-focals seem to pick up all kinds of glare and the only saving grace they have is the lack of scratches. With a bunch of FSU rangefinders on the way, you can bet I’m going to take the time to make a bunch of buffers for the things.

ps: I don't work for H.F. but I have started to look there first (on-line) when I want to do little projects and need small tools at low cost. I find I actually finish more things when I have the right tool on hand and I always enjoy the trip to the store.

Hard contacts were the answer for me. Plastic scratches too easily, glass gets imbedded with weld-spit, which then rusts...

Have purchased them for my Kiev, Zorki and Fed's, received the package in only 4 days from Japan, they work great and now I can get my eye with glasses on right up to the rangefinder, wish I had purchased them sooner.

I'm another contented buyer of the FSU patches. I heard about them before he advertised them for sale. I asked about them with an order for strap lug covers, and misc. He sent some samples that worked great with both my Contax & Kiev models. Much easier than the rubber rings I was using (poorly cut, because I can't do circles :bang: ).
This reminds me that I need more lug covers, so I might as well add some patches. His service is usually great, airmail from Japan is quick to me on East Coast. Yes, you can do it cheaper, but this is convenient and easy, and certainly doesn't break the bank. Keep the nice guys in business, we need them.
