Out of Tmax Dev.. now what??

Ok.. so.. I have 2 rolls of film from today and I had planned on developing it this evening but as it turns out I am short on T-max Developer - I have 100 ml which will only yield 500ml total and the tank requires 650ml - 700ml.

I have some Xtol, microphen, perceptol (all powdered) and Rodinal.

Which one would YOU use (or would you wait till tomorrow to get more Tmax) to develop 400 ASA Tri-X (shot @ 400) ?

(please note that I don't have access to Diafine) 😀

It is Tri-X, it will develop well in anything.

Do it tonight with Rodinal.

Why would you need diafine for TXT @ 400 anyway?

I'd go with XTOL first. Microphen 2nd. You won't have enough speed for Rodinal or Perceptol.

I've found Rodinal OK for 400, but it produces more grain but plenty sharpness. I'd be tempted to wait and get some more TMAX dev.

Well.. I did nothing last night but I am currently mixing XTol (I gotta make five litres of this stuff) for processing today.

I've never used XTol before so I'm hoping... HOPING.. it looks "nice". The only other Kodak powder I've ever used was D76 (which I thought worked very nicely with Acros and other films).

The last time I mixed this much powder I was baking a cheesecake.... 😀

On the film my advice is spend time shooting, develop when the snow falls and it's too cold to go out. (humour)

Dave, don't use the mixmaster... bubbles and film development don't go well together 😀

Jan, it may not be snowing today, but it's _cold_! Good day to dev some film... maybe the wind will die down a bit this aft.

I've got a couple good cheesecake recipes.. I don't make them that often because, since it's just me around here, ya know.. a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips... 😀 😀

As for developing.. I normally would leave these rolls be for the time being but, well, they're the first real rolls out of my "new to me" M6 and I just gotta see what they look like 😀

Dave, I'm assuming you can get both films in one tank together, if thats right, I would mix the T-max up 1+6 instead of 1+4 and give half of the xtra time for 1+8.

Sounds complicated but it's only splitting the difference between stock solution and stock (1+1)

it probably wont make much difference anyway just give it an extra minute and extra agitation.

If I had invested the $$ you have into Leica's I would probably be doing just what you are. Hope the formula is solved and you like the results.

Of the developers you mentioned, I"ve only used Rodinol. Microphen I think I used 20 years ago (I'm older than I look). It really depends on the look you want. Rodinol will be grainy but perhaps that is the look you are going for. One of my friends SWEAR by his TRI-X/Xtol combination. I think, of the list, Rodinol is a non-solvent developers and the others are solvent developers.

What is it about d76 that you do not like? Its the developer that all is compared to. But with Tri-x, I'll rate it 200 and dev with d76 1:1.

Not sure if you can get it in Canada, but SENSIDOL is a very inexpensive and good developer for 400 speed films. I normally use it when I'm processing Ilford HP5 instead of my favorite Rodinol, just because Sensidol softens the grain and provides fair gray-scale and tonaliity. But an opened bottle will only last 2-3 months max. Once it turns yellow, it's no good. I found out two days ago the hard way!

Someone at APUG recently described Xtol as the "ultimate D-76". Good description!

I just happen to have processed my first roll of TMax 100 ever.

I happened to use Rodinal 1:50 (12@20C per Massive Development Chart) because I didn't want to use my other primary developer, Emofin, which dissolves grain.. great with Neopan 400@800 but silly with TMax.

Scanned 4000ppi and printed A4 it's certainly NOT grainy (Epson 2200/OEM pig/QTRgui/Epson Enhanced Matte). I won't claim it's the ultimate developer for TMax...because it's the only developer I've ever used on TMax 😉
