Out of Tri-X !

I went into my main film-buying store today -- Downtown Camera in Toronto -- to pick up a brick of Tri-X. They didn't have any. 'What?' I said, 'that's like a bakery not having bread!'. They then explained to me that their Tri-X has been backordered from Kodak for over two months. Kodak no longer distributes from within Canada, as they did until recently, so it all comes up from the States.

Hard to believe -- this store likey sells more Kodak film than any store in Toronto and they've been left high and dry.

So, I bought a brick of Neopan 400.

Kodak, you're undermining my confidence. Tri-X is the only thing that keeps me loyal to any of your product line -- mess me about on Tri-X and I'm sorry but it's 'Sayonara, Kid!' :)

Apart from Silverprint, I haven't been able to buy more than two or three rolls from any shop in London for the last year or so. Is Kodak operating a rationing scheme. I can remember when we made Tri-x in the UK for the european market (hey, I even worked at the factory!).

I'm not very confident either that Kodak wants to remain a player with regards to B/W film. There are too many Goldman Sachs type business decisions going that seem hell bent on diminishing an already dwindling customer base for their B/W film products.
 
Hmm. I thought that B&W was still profitable, just not a growth industry. Hard to see the Great Yellow Father jettisoning a revenue stream out of pique. . . Can you order from B&H?

i have ignored kodak for years, except for that bottle of hc110 i bought and have not yet used.

kodak stopped caring about photographers years ago.

Joe, I have nothing but respect for Ilford and use some of their products, but I'm not a fan of HP5 -- just doesn't look right to me in terms of tonal range. Neopan 400 however is very close to the look of Tri-X and has even finer grain. It doesn't push as well, but otherwise it's a good switch.

Fuji are good guys too, and I don't mind supporting them.

7dayshop.com - not sure where the islanders get there stuff from, but they've never been out of the stock for me.
 
The photo store in Ottawa has also been sold out of Tri-X for several weeks. There goes my theory that you Toronto guys were hogging it all!!!:D
 
Delta 400 is going to look a lot like Tmax.. it's a t-grain structured film vs Tri-X which has a grain signature that's different (as far as I'm aware).

Gene, I've been asking for Tri-X for the last little while - it's no where to be found at Downtown Camera. I too am saddened by this.

For the time being I have a couple rolls of HP5 only because I did like it when I shot it as a kid but I don't know what it's like for pushing to 1600 - which is why I like Tri-X.

Your other options would be Henry's or Vistek.

Henry's online site lists Tri-X as in-stock at the downtown superstore, which is only across the street from Downtown Camera. I usually shop at Henry's since it's the only pro store out here in the 'burbs.

With 100ft bulk rolls of FP4+, HP5+, Neopan 1600, APX100 & TriX, it'll be a while before I buy any film :D
 
Gene, It is not just Kodak lacking control, but large size companies experience issues like this. No one cares, as long the problem is not coming to someone's office cubicle to bite them!!

All I have to say is it is F@#$ crap!

If I you were you, get on the phone, to Kodak directly in the USA!

Gene, please write a letter, it is warranted for NO INVENTORTY! You might get something out of it also. You have been buying Tri-X for many many years, thus a lot of money has been spent on Kodak Film by you. This is unacceptable!
If no letter is written, then no one will know. Please write to them! I beg you.
Tell them you are a investor as well. :)

I like Delta 100 but don't care for Delta 400 -- at higher ISO's I'm not a T-grain film fan. Delta 100 is pretty sweet, but I lean more towards Acros 100.

I keep coming up Fuji :)

But, at mid-speed I like FP4 and at low-speed I like Pan-F, so Ilford will definitely get some of my business!

i don't like the tmax films but i do like the delta films.
they are not exactly the same looking, to me anyways.

fuji is good too but out west way more money than the ilford stuff.
 
No Tri-X available? My day is ruined. i wonder if Kodak b&w films will go the way of the papers (Ektalure, Medalist, etc.).
 
I have just about given up on Tri-X, which I used since the 1970s. The emulsion now is very different, finer grain but flatter, like TMax. And the negs just dont build up density the way they used to. Better for scanning, but my concern is more the silver print. I've pretty much decided to change over to HP5+, which to me looks more like what trix USED to look like that today's trix.
 
I am apoplectic but counsel calmness and control. OK, that sounds stupid, but hey, consider the source.

I AM CALLING KODAK PROFESSIONAL FILM SUPPORT TOMORROW (2/22) AND I WILL FIND OUT WTF IS GOING ON.

I PROMISE YOU I WILL RAISE A STINK. IF NECESSARY, I WILL GO TO THE KODAK STORE @ KODAK PARK ON SAT [OK, I HAVE TO CHECK IF THEY ARE OPEN ON SATURDAYS] AND I WILL GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS.
