Out of Tri-X !

Damn. There's my solution. Go to Paris, buy lots of Tri-X, and stay for a month of street shooting.

I gotta start thinking outside the box more often! :)

This store is one of the best pro shops in Toronto. They make every effort (far more than the other pro shops) to stock what people want (they've gone above and beyond for me on many an occasion). This is not your local Wal-Mart. They didn't put anything in front of me -- just explained why they were out of stock. I asked for Neopan 400 because I needed a brick of good iso 400 B&W.

I find this plenty of reason to bash the 'suits' who now run Kodak. If they can't keep stock in one of the biggest pro film-selling stores in the largest city in Canada, they're an incompetent bunch, at best. That's being kind to them.

I apologize :) I have had more than one bad experience where I walk into a camera shop and ask for Kodak film and am told all kinds of reasons why I should buy Fuji. The best was "Kodak isn't interested in film anymore and is going all digital, but all Fuji does is film. Buy some Fuji film, it makes any of Kodak's products look like garbage." That was kind of funny since I happen to own a Fuji digital :) But when I get that spiel, I leave and find a store that sells Kodak. There was a day when I wasn't so picky, but the more I shoot, the more I know what I want.

That would put me off too. I hear stuff like that in electronics shops sometimes when I ask questions about this or that product. If I hear anyone steering me away from the product I was asking about by poo-pooing it, and praising something else, I know where they're getting their best commission :)

Or perhaps I'm turning in a cynic before my time :)

Update: I was in Downtown Camera yesterday and Tri-X is back in stock. I bought a brick.

For RFFers in the GTA, I also have a brick of Neopan 400 36exp, fresh and unopened, that I bought a few weeks back when the Tri-X ran out. If any of you are fans of Neopan, I'll trade you my brick of Neopan for another brick of Tri-X

Shopping 101

Shopping 101

How could be in the economic interest of a manufacturer not to supply their distributors?

Stores prefer to sell what's in stock and whatever has the best profit margin.
And in my experience they will tell you *anything* to help make the sale...

It also seems that Kodak's distribution channel in Canada may be undergoing some change. There's a cantankerous thread about it over on APUG, but I won't link to it here because you might think less of me due to my post, which was veiled in a certain civility ... but the veil was somewhat thin. ;)
