overzealous cops

It's sad that so many people think you aren't allowed to photograph in public in the US. It's even sadder when the Police don't know the laws (or lack of a law).
 
I was told to stop taking pictures of a mural at a city-owned parking garage and the attendant said it was a city ordinance and that I needed a permit. I then walked the two blocks to city hall and the city manager's office and asked to buy a permit to shoot pictures on the downtown streets. They told me no such permit was required, and then called the parking dept. and instructed them to train their people on the right to photograph in public.
I went back to the garage a week later and shot my pictures. The same attendant sat quietly in his booth and left me alone.
