Beware of the Minilux, and the dreaded E2 message on thetop plate. You have a dead shutter and a hefty repair bill.
There are threads on RFF re this.

I'm really narrowing down what I use the most in order to have only a few cameras total. My GR1 and new GR21 are not going anywhere. I use them more than anything else. The Hexar AF is on probation (too complicated, but great quality) pending my testing of a substitute for that long focal-length spot (Minilux or T2). My Leica M2 is collecting dust, and my Bessa R4 is in the classifieds
I may end up with a Contax G if I don't like the Minilux/T2.
The thing about P&S is that you can justify a few of them, since you only get one lens on each and need to cover all of your needs. Only you know when it's become frivolous.

I still need to fill my longer focal length void, which is why I'm considering the minilux. From what I've read it's fairly trouble prone, but then again so are the GR series cameras (just had my gr1s serviced for a new lens assembly).
I've had it for less than half a day and I'm really liking the UC-1 and it's different modes. Auto, day+flash, night, night+flash, Bulb (!) and wait for it... BULB + FLASH. I am thoroughly impressed. Lets hope it hasn't been abused and is still capable of sharp results.

I have one, called the Espio Mini in the UK. Great little camera. You're right about all the options. Really smart bit of kit. The results are great too. I bought mine a few years ago and although I've not used it as much as I'd like to have(the problem with having too many), it's one of the most pleasant to use and I've always had excellent results from it. It's a fave of the climbers as well as it can be operated in one hand(does not include changing the setting though!). You can open the lens cover and compose and snap just in your right hand. Try that with an Olympus XA or most other high quality P&S's. Very likeable camera.

I too, like the tiny Pentax Mini and I'm fortunate enough to have the matching remote release for it, not that I use it much. The lens is very sharp and though I own both the Mju-I and Mju-II I much prefer the Pentax.

I just sold my Nikon 35ti down the river for a pittance... I would have been a lot happier selling it to you. I'm done with P&S, though... Don't get me wrong, I like them, but after owning a high-end one like the 35ti and always leaving it home, I realized that any of these cameras will stay in the shelf chez moi. Seems like my natural inclination is a camera with knobs and buttons...

I've just read the thread through and can't cope as I agree with all the arguments against them but, at the same time, I also agree with all the arguments in favour of them.
Worst still, I've notice a couple I haven't owned, yet.

PS and I must put some film in that old Olympus AF-1 I bought the other day...

I'm full circle. I've given up on GAS and am down to four cameras: Nikon D5000, Fuji F20, Fujica Compact Deluxe rangefinder, and a Vivitar Cosina/SLR. Why have 10 of the same camera, that do essentially the same thing, with slight variations unless you enjoy collecting them? My point-n-shoot is my little Fuji F20. I've been tempted by a few film and some digital ones but am happy with it, use it often...

I think that you have hit the nail squarely on the head with this statement, Nick. I do enjoy collecting them, I enjoy the cameras themselves almost as much as the pictures that they produce.
Sure, I would probably enjoy collecting vintage muscle cars even more, but for a collector on a budget, I can't think of anything that is more satisfying. And unlike most collectibles, these little cameras are actually something that I use on a regular basis. They get me out of the house and away from the computer, and out into the daylight and fresh air. I fill my pockets full of several point and shooters every weekend, and take long walks, exploring and rediscovering my sleepy little town.
I have lost at least 20 pounds since I started my collection, and feel better physically and sharper mentally than I have in at least 20 years. I doubt that I would feel the same had I decided to collect Hummel figurines or silk Japanese fans instead.

The Nikon 35Ti has an amazing sharp f/2.8 lens, aperture priority exposure, a gorgeous analog dials, and jewel-like finish. Here's a picture from my 35Ti (Ilford XP2 scanned at Costco, and then cropped in LR):
And I have the 35Ti on sale on the classified forum too:

Had one, sold it. Very nice P&S. Had to let it go as I favoured the Ricoh GR1v and Minolta TC-1 over it. Also sold the TC-1 and the GR1v. After about a year, my head started comprehending that I'd made a mistake. The only one I really wanted back was the GR1v so I bought another. There's not a lot of difference in quality with these high end P&S's. The TC-1 is the best. IMHO better than the Contax T3 which I owned, until I found the TC-1 was usually in my pocket and the T3 was in the drawer most of the time. Hell, I even used the GR1v more than the T3. From the many P&S's I've owned, I'd say the GR1v is the most portable high quality P&S in it's field. I can put that one in my jeans pockets without any problem. The others are just a little too chunky and really need a jacket or fleece pocket to carry comfortably. The 35TI had this problem too. Beats every other camera for looks but I thought it a tad fragile and expected any day for the dial needles to fail or the glass to break. Not what you want from a carry everywhere camera. Nice to look at, but too afraid to use.

2 Yashica's T4
Olympus XA2
Olympus MJU-1
Samsung ECX-1
Nikon L35AF
Olympus Superzoom 140s
I've sold already the XA2 and the one T4 and for the ridiculously high prices they fetch i will sell the other T4 for and stock up with the year's films and developing stuff.
The ECX-1 probably stays but the 140s goes. And then i will see which one of the two (L35AF or Mju-1) stays. The ECX-1 and the Mju-1 have not been film tested yet....

I wish I could justify putting down a few hundred on a 35ti or 28ti. I don't have a compact auto focus camera at the moment. The XA4 is the closest - and I do love it for the wide angle lens - but either of the tis would be awesome. I just can't emotionally justify putting down $200 for any camera.

The 35ti will sell for $300-400, the 28ti for $600+ if that helps your justification. I often find RFF members quote 'ideal' prices rather than the regularI wish I could justify putting down a few hundred on a 35ti or 28ti. I just can't emotionally justify putting down $200 for any camera.![]()

Especially for a point-and-shoot. I just can't understand why people are willing to give £200 for a plastic p&s like the T4. I have 2 and i think that the L35AF produces equaly good (if not better) results.

If you need 28mm lens in compact package, buy one of 28-70/80/100 compacts for a tener plus you'll have mild tele. Sure if you want exactly 28ti, that's another. IQ? Hm, but it will be in your pocket every time you go out. Picture captured with distortions is better than ideal one but not captured.

Justifying spending X amount on a camera? Easy. If you spend a lot of money just make sure you use it. We are talking hundreds here. Whats the problem? You would go out and buy a car for thousands and not leave it in garage wouldn't you? So why would you spend hundreds on a camera and not use it? It's all down to mind set. Spend it, use it. Simple as that. You don't need any more justification than that!
