P&S - what do you recommend?

I have a Yashica T4 Super D with the Carl Zeiss T* 35mm lens and "superscope" (which is a a pretty OK waist level viewer on top of the camera, which is handier than you would think) for sale if you are interested.

It is the silver version with the date back and weather proofing and is in excellent condition as I am the original owner. The lens is perfect and is a real performer, check out some reviews and you will see it compares extremely well to the Contax T3 and Ricoh Gr1V. I have the velvet case, instruction manual AND if I look hard enough I should still have the original box somewhere.

These things have become bit of a cult camera since Terry Richardson started becoming insanely famous, and made a point of stating how he uses two of these cameras for all his work:

Anyway I was going to sell it on Evilbay, but have put if off due to some horror stories from other RFF members and the fact that someone just recently tried to scam me on something I had bid on...so I would definitely prefer to buy and sell with people here on RFF.

I picked up an Olympus Stylus Epic (non zoom) brand new off ebay for $30 a few months ago.. they're pretty easy to find.. have a nice VF.. take excellent photos.. have ability to adjust for backlighting.. and they're tiny enough to slip the included carrying cord around your neck and wear like a necklace.. you practically forget it's there

it also has a self-timer, in case that matters

I have the original stylus infinity and it does a nice job too.
Easy to slip into a pocket.
 
Cheap, good quality, no-brainer would be an Olympus Stylus Epic. It's got everything you want, exluding maybe a zoom, and it's waterproof. 😉

If you are going for a digital camera, consider the Canon Powershot A series. An A75 or an A80 should serve her well. They have decent zooms, but are not waterproof. 🙁
 
for digital cameras, I'd have to say the best bang for the buck these days is the Panasonic DMC-FZ15.. it's got a Leica f2.8 lens, with a zoom range of 38-432mm (guessing, but that's about right) and has built-in image stabilizing for those handheld zoomed shots..and it really works well! you get 4 MP for under $400 if you shop around

there is also the larger version (FZ20) that adds another megapixel for another $100.. or the little brother, FZ3, that's noticeably smaller, and is a moderate 3 MP.. cost is around $325

all models have a razor sharp lens and programmed and manual modes (Aperture priority, Shutter priority, full manual or full auto).. the metering is dead on
 
Another vote the the Stylus Epic, given your criteria.

Of course I don't know your financial condition so I don't know how you define "cheap" but my choice of The Best P&S is the Contax T3. 😀

Yashica T4 Super - Carl Zeiss lens - no zoom. I've had mine for 9 years. PLUS it's got a second fiewfinder on TOP of the camera for those stealth shots. I use it a lot, and as far as I can recall (which, admittedly is not all that far these days) it still has the original battery! When you shut it off a little door closes over the lens to protect it.

I've had my T4 Super for about that long and darn it, I finally had to replace the battery this year (like last month). Imagine that, after only 8 1/2 years the battery poops out on me. As they say, "They don't make them like they used to." But I'll cut'em a little slack since it has such a fabulous lens on it.
 
Yeah, what's with these Yashica guys. Don't they understand the concept of "planned obsolesence?"

I love that top viewfinder. Once I put the camera on top of my shoe and watched as a cat (they are indeed curious) slowly approached to see what it was. Got a great shot from an obviously unusual angle.

One more vote for the Olypus Stylus Epic with the fixed 35mm lens. Cheap, light, small, and a great lens.

I'm on my third and fourth one. The others were destroyed in situations where I would never have taken a camera that I couldn't afford to break. But I've gotten some incredible shots in those situations.

I believe everyone with an active lifestyle should have at least one "expendable" camera with a great lens.

Check E-Bay as Olympus occasionally sells them as "refurbished". I've bought several that way and they looked and worked like new.
 
I have a Yashica T4 (zoom) as well and I like it indeed. I also have an earlier T2 (had to buy it for only $11 !).

So I guess I vote for giving the Yashicas a looksie.
 
I bought a nikon L35 at my local thrift store for $2.00 its great with a very sharp lens a 35mm 2.8 nikon. I have some pics on my gallery with this camera. it is auto focus and auto exposure.
 
Yashica T4 Super (or T5 in some parts of the world). Among inexpensive P&S cameras, the lens can't be beat for sharpness and good contrast. The attached image is an example of what it can do.

I'd go for the Olympus Stylus. In fact I have-- bought two. The first when they were just introduced as a gift to my mother(that she almost didn't get after I showed her how to work it) the second just last year when the first gave up the ghost. Some times I'm a dumba##. I bought the new one at a local drug store chain and when the young woman rang it up the price was all of 38 $ and change. I asked her if she was sure that was correct(the Oly was going for about 80$ mail order from NYC) and she checked and yes it was. The store was no longer going to be selling any film cameras but disposables and were selling the last of what they had on hand. There was one more at that store and I didn't buy the dern thing 🙁
