Pad of Death...what to use?

Okay everyone, new Yashica Electro G arrived today. RF is in great shape and cosmetically excellent all around. The electronics work, but the pad of death is a clump of sticky mush. No clunk whatsoever! What material can I use to replace it? Any ideas? What about a piece of the neoprene that came with my interslice kit?

I would use a relatively hard material but not so hard that it would not be possible to stick a pin into it for insertion using the microsurgery technique .

Anyone know what that thickness is in millimeters or fractions of an inch? Do I need a micrometer to make sure or is it something I can eyeball?

And what kind of glue should I use?

Since the thickness dimension has a pretty close tolerance, I doubt you can eyeball it (unless you want to measure 5/64" with a steel scale and then do some trial fitting.)

A micrometer probably would be overkill, but a dial caliper would be just the ticket. You can get decent but inexpensive Chinese-made ones at Harbor Freight Tool and similar places for under $20. It's also useful for other camera-related measuring, such as determining the diameters of filters, lens rings, etc.

I used a piece of bakelite and UHU Alleskleber Eyeballed the thickness. Microsurgery-method (no ripping-off of leatherette). It worked.

I bought a 5/8 inch rubber tap washer and got 5 or 6 pads out of it. Nice neoprene rubber and bang on 2mm (80 thou) thick) - sticks well with a small drop of cyano....
