Hi all, just wanted to announce that another DSLR user is converted to the rangefinder world. I travelled to Keeble and Schuchat in Palo Alto, CA and put my deposit for an M8!
Next, I'm going to rent an M7 from them for a weekend and shoot a few rolls of film. Any advice on film that I should try out for black and white and color photos?

As for second thoughts, I'm sure there will be plenty. One day with an M7 is probably hardly enough to gain enough experience to really get the feel. From what I hear, a lot of people like the M bodies, so there must be a lot of truth to the statement. I'm assuming the photography experience improves as the photographer gains experience. Correct? Or do you not like Leica rangefinders?

They said the waiting list is around 20 so far. Jeff, one of the managers, mentioned 15 leicas in the first delivery. Another person mentioned 3 leicas in the first delivery. So I don't know the truth right now. They are supposedly one of the biggest leica dealers around.

K & S is going to have the M8 and Leica reps at the store on the 10th as I posted in the Bay Area forum.

I really like your photoblog. Nice photos. Jeff at K&S mentioned 10th while the Leica Demo Days schedule displayed by another post showed Dec 1,2nd timeframe. I'm gonna call again later next week and double check. I'm hoping if I get there very early I'll be able to buy one from the rep that day!

M8, M8, M8, every time I log in I see someone is crowing about getting their M8, and I have yet to see a single shot taken with this camera, and I bet when they finally start appearing they will look as good as but not significantly better than any high-end Canon, Nikon, Olympus or other SLR digital camera or the RD1 for that matter. So what's the big deal, besides the cost? I'm in a cranky mood tonight...sorry about the rant.

So Mr. mc_vancouver is a little cranky about another crow over the M8. I'll entertain his frustration.
I think it might be helpful to have some backround about me. I'm 35 years old, a computer engineer in the Silicon Valley, CA. I've always been interested in photography from my younger years but mainly used SLR's and some point and shoots. With my engineering job, I occassionally have a little extra spending cash for fun. So I jumped into the digital world of photography. Purchased the Canon 10D, moved up to the 1DMarkII, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8L lenses. I've done some portrait, weddings, events, family, church, vacation, landscape.
I love the quality lenses and the excellent photographs I can take with the 1D MarkII. However, I no longer do weddings, events and church photography. My main outlet for photography is family, vacation and landscapes. I am finding that I rarely take my huge Canon 1DMarkII anywhere because of the shear size of it. Also, even when I do take it, it is often tucked away in LowPro zoom case that can be teadious to take in and out. And once I do unveil the monster... well, all you rangefinder guys know the drawback here.
So I have long looked for a quality camera system that is compact, but I don't want to give up access to fast and awesome lenses, don't want to be looking at an LCD screen and want goos resolultion with good high ISO performance. I want to stay digital because I am already heavily invested in digital. Photoshop CS, color calibration, Lacie 19inch monitor, etc. Besides, I'm a digital kind of guy.
So here comes the M8.
- Excellent, fast lenses.
- Compact form factor.
- High resolution digital.
- Good color reproduction
- Accurate, optical rangefinder.
Sure, I'm giving up lots of bells and whistles. But as others have mentioned, those bells can easily just get in the way. Most of the time, I'm choosing aperature, focusing and shooting. Manual focus seems a little scary to me, but I also like the idea of being able to manually focus on a system that is built for it. I welcome the challenge.
