Regarding the clear-coat.... If you're using lacquer paint, make sure you use a lacquer clear-coat. If you want a really good, durable clear, paint with polyurethane with a hardener, and clear with polyurethane and hardener. That will give you the best protection.

Also, after the clear, and once it is dry, buff to a clear shine but do not sand it smooth before you buff it. Let the use of your finger over time be the sanding portion of it.
