Does anybody use this, and do you have trouble opening raw files? I just got the software yesterday and can't get RAW Lab to open with Canon and Olympus files. I get a reading file error message. It opens JPEG and TIF files. Right now, I'm stuck opening raw files in another program and saving them to TIF then opening the new files in X3.

You just installed the program. Now you'll want to update the program. DONT LET PSP DO IT ITSELF!!!! It will download the last update only and it relies on having the first four already installed. Go to Corel's website, hover over the Support tab and click Patches and Updates from the dropdown menu then click on Painshop Photo Pro X3 (or if just click this link http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index.jsp?ppid=800007&prnid=3300167&pgid=800161 ). You will see all 5 service packs listed. You NEED to install each and every service pack in order. Start with 1 and end with 5. If you install out of order is screws stuff up and the fix is to uninstall and reinstall the software (way more of a PITA than it should be).

PSPX4 was released a while ago. Any camera released since then will not be supported X3. Corel has also since bought Bibble and renamed it Aftershot Pro, so RAW support is of even lower priority in PSP. But if you catch it on sale Aftershot Pro is rather affordable (considered a rival to LightRoom).

Again, do not let PSP download the update itself, it will just grab the latest and screw everything up.

I have been a user of PSP for a few years now and think its a great piece of software that meets 99% of photographers' post processing needs. With a few exceptions I much prefer it to Photoshop which in Elements version is cut back and a bit limited in some respects and in the full version is both too complex and too expensive for photographers (no doubt brilliant for graphic artists who need its full capabilities.) .

But I skipped over version X3 going straight from X2 to X4 which has better RAW file handling. I suspect as the other poster here says you will need to update the software to handle later RAW types.

If you get stuck I am pretty sure you can download the adobe DNG converter (its free) and use it to convert your specific files from whatever type they are to a generic DNG type then open this in X3.

This works in X4 although it seems to be able to open most present types of RAW file and so is not usually needed.

But its inevtiable that photo processing software gets out of date as new cameras become available with thier new RAW variants and unless the software manufacturer puts out update regulalry an intermediate conversion becomes necessary.

Thanks. The patches/updates haven't helped unless there is a procedure other than File > Open

I'll try the forum.

Thanks

Again, I never liked PSP for RAW images and just used the software that came with the camera. I even tried Corel Aftershot Pro because the introductory price was less than the cost of taking the family out for dinner, and I still find myself using DPP for my Canon files.

considered a rival to LightRoom
yeah, right, with profiles for cameras made from poorly illuminated targets @ imaging-resource ... now that is a quality to speak about :bang:
