yeah, this is the one that got me excited because i always have my phone with me even if i don't have a separate camera with me. now hopefully my cell phone provider will carry it, i've been waiting years for them to get the lumia 1020 with no luck.

i'm hoping that price is retail and that it will be greatly discounted at the cell phone provider level. i guess when you consider that the new canon 1" camera and sony 1" cameras are $700 and up, this camera phone won't be cheap.

That is most likely the non-carrier contract price. The new iPhone 6+ is over 650 non-contract as a comparison.
Now all Panasonic needs is a couple of major carriers to sign on.

I casually found the announcement on dpreview connect while searching for some info.
I went
when I saw it. I didn't foresee it that soon and from Panasonic. Long time I thought about someone (Aside Nokia) putting a big sensor in a smartphone.
A caveat is that I found it will have a rather thin distribution. Seemingly only France and Germany for the EU market. Agree in that it is expensive.
In any case, a nice step towards the future of cameraphone convergence and integration.

Not a great smartphone, and not a great camera, all in one package -- for $1160.
I think that's a reasonable way to put it. I must say, I do think the design is very nice, and I expect the camera to be pretty good. However, I like a QWERTY keyboard on my phone, and a viewfinder on my camera, so this is just too many compromises.
Plus for the same money I could get a new BlackBerry and a great camera too.

I found a video ad about it. It even has 4k video.. Still no good details on the phone. It is really emphasizing the camera part.

While I am not interested in it.. I think there could be others that would be.

With this phone, I'm seriously wondering whether it will very soon be time for myself to ditch the dedicated digital camera, and stick purely with film. Anyone else thinking similarly?

the market is literally flooded with "smartphones." I don't waste my time with them unless I'm on the road for my kid to call me. China has a massive "smartphone" industry. I read android clones go for about $50. All I need is call capacity, google maps, internet for local restaurants, alarm, video and camera. I'll go as high as $60.

I guess I'd argue that it's not a phone. It's a P&S camera with phone circuitry added in the corner. But that's just me.

Most of the price is for Leica prime lens on it!

Since this Panasonic won't fit in my jeans/shorts/slacks pocket, I prefer to carry my X-Pro 1 in a small man purse.

The 1" sensor is interesting, but nothing new really: http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/07/galaxy-k-zoom-review/

i believe that samsung has a 1/2.3" sensor, which is much smaller than a 1" sensor.

tough crowd, just a couple of years ago the sony rx100 was praised for incorporating a 1" sensor into such a small package. now the sensor is being put into an even smaller (thinner at least) package and it's completely dismissed, lol.

Yeh, there's that cutoff point - once it won't fit your pockets, that opens you up to a much larger product segment. The LX3 taught me that it wouldn't be so bad to carry an X100 on my shoulder all day.

It is only slightly longer than the iPhone. Thickness wise it is thinner than my rx100.. It think it may fit.

Too bad this is only available in Europe...I think it would be interesting competition here in US. It is a gsm phone. The guy in the video uses his iPhone to help compare the size of the new Panasonic.

They have a compare shot lower down after the video insert that compare Sony camera phone w/ the Panasonic in terms of a sample shot.

Looks like enough people in US convinced Panasonic to release their cm1 in US after all. Anyone interested?
