Panasonic L 1 - I want one !!!

A K100D super for $400 with lens has a larger sensor, lots of lenses to mount on, and better low light capabilities is better for my needs.
Yeah, but it doesn't look like an RF, does it. This is about GAS and style, not logic. :D

Style AND ASdee related dee'sabilty ... My Pentax is , like most of the world , like I am seeing past it ... not registering it ... but the M8 is solid real - as is the L1 ...

Maybe a crazee way to approach a camera , but ASdee is crazeee !...

Thanks Peterm1 - interesting thoughts - but the Pentax review is just as tricky ...

The Pentax is OK ... but I am reluctant to spend money on expensive lenses ... again the Panasonic will accept all but my Minolta sr lenses !

I must say I have a hard time imagining how you are holding the camera, I never come close to that part of the bottom on my L1. My finger tips are around the lens, my palm under the body, my right hand on top. The way I hold all cameras, so I can manipulate the focus or zoom.

Bear in mind that in your photo you are using the large kit lens that came with the camera so your hand is placed well forward to steady it. I often use (smaller) third party prime lenses with adapters. I do hold the camera in a similar position to that in your photo but especially with smaller lenses it naturally occurs that the palm of my hand is further back towards my body - cradling the base plate of the camera to steady it. In this position my index finger and thumb are holding the lens (to turn it for focus) and my pinkie finger rests on the underside of the camera body, (steadying it) almost exactly on the battery door latch. As this has no real resistance (spring) holding it shut the slightest inadvertent movement can cause the door to flip open. A further slight movement (easily done when concentrating on picture taking) can then un catch the battery lock causing the battery to eject.

I suppose you could say its a bit like the old doctor joke ......."Doctor, it hurts when I do THIS!" to which the doctors replies "Well don't do THAT!" But its still a slight design flaw in the camera. Minor I grant you but it has happened often enough to convince me that it is not just me, its the way the camera has been designed.

I don't get it. If you're going to carry a camera this big, why not a DSLR? You get better sensor performance at high iso's. There aren't even any compact prime lenses for the 4/3 system.

Am I missing something?
This is a DSLR.

Yes, got it! no problem there ... :)

Now tell me about L1's AF confirmation with manual lenses. There are some discussion in pnet about the AF confirmation only usable in higher aperture due to thin DOF in lower ones.

Anybody got experience to share?

Dee, if I end up getting an L1, I'll have you to blame :D
AF confirmation light works in all apertures. I tried with different lenses from 1.4 to f22. But light is sensitve, meaning you have dial in slowly or you will miss it.

And why, pray tell, do you supposed God invented The Handy Man's Secret Weapon, and with a choice of black, no less? :p

Although if there was a wide angle I would sure consider it, something wider than 14mm

There is actually a very nice Olympus 8mm full frame fisheye. Made as beautifully as the Leica kit lens. I have tried it and cna confirm that its one swell lens.

As to the tape on the door - yes that is what I am now doing. (Gaffer tape actually.)

Can the L! use Rokkor MC / D lenses with adapter - I have a bunch of 'em .

I think so, Cameraquest has a slew of adapters for 4/3rd cameras. One of them has got to be for MD lenses.

I currently have adapters for OM, C/Y, and M42. All glass-less, infinity focus, and simple to use on my E-300.

I have owned one for two-three months. ... (cropped)

Peter, thank you for the in-depth real-user-review of the L1. Like yourself, I am a DSLR user with old manual focus lenses, so AF confirmation is a big magnet for me to this camera.

All things considered, I think I'll wait until I raised the fund to get an E3. Maybe by that time someone has actually tried out the Dandelion AF confirmation chip from Russia and posted their experiences online to help me decide.
