Panasonic LX3 firmware update

Haven't downloaded and installed yet, will do tonight. Apparenlty no 'noticable' changes.

nope sorry, nothing online states what the improvements (if any) are. this just may be an 'under the hood' update (i.e. speed up write speeds or something, who knows?).

i'll update later and see if i notice anything, i'll also be keeping an eye out if i read that anything has changed.

I have an unpacked box that arrived this morning. I hope and expect it contains my 'new' LX-3. Not sure which other guys admit to having one of these cameras but would appreciate some form of contact, so thanks for this posting.

John, the LX-3 will blow you away for such a tiny package! Raw images are the way to go, of course, and up to A4 (the largest I can print) it holds it's own against a 10mp DSLR such as my Samsung GX-10 until you rack up the ISO. Sure the lens range is a bit limited, but the quality from that Leica lens is terrific. My only gripe is that Panasonic don't have a clip-on v/f that shows the wide end full view, with a patch in the middle at the tele end, so I use a Voigtlander 24mm finder. Like most compacts, the screen can be hard to see in bright sunlight - time for the LX-5 and viewfinder?? Get thee hence Temptation!

Hi, John.

I got my (new) LX3 a couple of weeks ago, and it had the firmware v.2.2 on it already. So they're already coming from the factory preinstalled with v.2.2.

Don't know what the differences are between this version and earlier ones (I only know this one) but, like Ray said, it's a great camera: great interface, small package, quick and responsive, great image quality.

My LX3 replaces a Powershot G3 that I never really took to. Love it so far. Samples here.

fbf - the updates are different and have different vers. numbers.

my verdict since updating to 2.2 is nothing noticeably different. some operations may be faster, but I can't tell the difference.

for me, i use the 21mm viewfinder i also use for my Super Angulon and that works nicely on the camera for my needs.

I see ver. 2.2 for both, the file size is identical. Anything new?

I've got a Clearview from Gary Robertshaw in the post - or so he says.
That should help with the screen issues. Also find I have a Helios Viewfinder 'in stock' and will investigate using that. I see several have been sold to LX-3 owners.

John, I've had an LX3 since March 2009, at lower ISOs the IQ is excellent, at ISOs 800 and above you get chroma and luminance noise but noise reduction (I use Noise Ninja) works well, but with loss of detail. You can get around that in Photoshop by using a mask on the NR layer, and varying the amount of NR on edge detail.
You can get excellent people shots using some negative exposure compensation with fill flash. High flash synch speed is an advantage the LX3 has over DSLRs, unless you use high-speed synch on the DSLR flash (which then reduces the guide number). Most digicams have limited ability to shoot shallow DOF but the LX3 has quite pleasant bokeh at f2 and close focusing distances.
You have to watch blowing highlights with small sensor cameras like the LX3 so check the histogram.

Just arrived in my mailbox today a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. Got it from the Gazelle Store in Mass. Looks new, but it's not. Haven't a clue about this camera, reputation, IQ,etc., and could use some advice about how to run it. Right now I'm charging the battery. Then I get to format the new 2G SD card.

Any advice deeply appreciated.
