Just loaded up my first roll of PanF (took me a while to figure out I had to trim the leader of my bulk rolled cartridge to get it to load <grin>).

For lower contrast, whats the best way to shoot and dev this film? I have Rodinol and Xtol to use at the moment.

Daniel.

Yeh, but it doesn't really talk about how to shoot it.. I read some people saying it doesn't like over-exposure and others saying to rate it at ISO 25 to get lower contrast..

Thanks for trying!

Daniel.

ISO 80 in Microphen or DDX, ISO 32 or even 25 in Perceptol. the latter is deadly slow but very forgiving and tonally excellent.

These are true ISO speeds and will hold good to some extent in other speed increasing developers (probably Diafine, certainly Paterson FX-50) and other fine-grain developers. You may prefer different EIs.

Reducing speed will not per se reduce contrast unless you also reduce development time.

Cheers,

Roger (www.rogerandfrances.com, where there's a free module in Photo School about ISO speeds)

There are a couple of pictures in my gallery made using pan f+ developed in diafine and rated at iso 50. I think it's a good combination.

Pretty sure he said he had Rodinal and Xtol only, guys. 😉

The guys on apug.org SWEAR by Rodinal and PanF as a good combo. I have Rodinal but haven't tried that. I have tried it in Xtol 1:1, though. Though it isn't a low-contrast solution, really, you could try getting around that temporarily by pulling dev time just slightly maybe? I shot it at straight 50 and forget what time I used. The results were fine enough to make me plan on ordering a 100' roll of it with my next film order.

You can check here for times and developer suggestions as well: Unblinkingeye's PanF development page

Sorry I don't have a better scan online but here's the only PanF + Xtol 1:1 shot I have online: http://www.pbase.com/chiapuke/image/33134942/original.jpg

just to be complete 🙂 I give em light for 25 ASA and develop in Rodinal 1+50, time from datasheet (50 ASA) minus 30 percent (for the 25 ASA).

And I like the film, but it needs so much light 🙂.
