Panthermic 777 Developer

I have a package of this stuff at home, wanted to start and have read the comments about "aging" the developer to get the best results. What I didn't understand is how much square inches of film I have to waste in one gallon of this developer to age it ... 😱

Any help / tips on this welcome ! 🙂

Steve,

I saw the agitation thing. As a confirmed rolling Jobo tank junkie, that caution is disturbing.

Gabor,

I wouldn't call it wasted. You will need some testing. Somewhere near the end of the article I saw mention of 20 rolls being enough to ripen the developer.

I can see why this developer was favored by large commercial darkrooms with massive amounts of film going through it. There might be a reason why it never caught on in small home darkrooms.

Wayne, 20 rolls .... 😱 OK .... The other problem is mixing that stuff but I will give it a try ... 😀 First results next week ! 😎

W665 is another ultra fine grain developer from Windisch. It's based on Ortho Phenylene Diamine so less toxid and nasty to handle then PPD.

I was able to get rid of the grain of Fomapan Creative 200 on 40x50cm from a 35mm negative. Also the large grey scale was pretty good in combination of this W665 developer.

OPD or PPD gives even smaller grain then Perceptol or Microdol-X.

Here a test example on Fomapan Creative 200 (E.I. 100) for 9:45 Minutes (20degrees C) :

OK, this sounds better:

Fred de Van: 777 seems to work best at 75º F and above, and is best used in large quantities (big tanks). It changes a little after the first few rolls and a new batch should be ripened with a few unimportant rolls--it will then be stable for years. It really lasts well, even though visually it is not confidence-inspiring. Murky is normal. It is hard to mix, and the initial mixing is critical. Agitation is quite important--do it the same every time.

Keep us posted on your progress.

The large tank advice is interesting. I could make up 2 gallons and fill my Jobo 2553 tank for inversion agititation. It holds a lot.

Hmm... Interesting reading but I think I'll stick to the devil I know in Diafine... 😉

Neat thread, nonetheless, Wayne. Thank you.

From APUG:

Just ordered both the developer and the replenisher. Each come in 4-1 gal. packages, the former @$46.75, the latter @ $58.32.

BILL

1 gallon replenisher = 170 rolls of film.

Do the math. This stuff is cheaper than Diafine. 😀 😱

If I ever reconstitute a true darkroom, I plan on giving 777 a try for my sheet film. I'm not sure I would do it for roll film, since some have indicated it "likes" deep tanks better.

Wayne, are you going to try it with 4x5?

As soon as I can come up with $105 I'll try everything in a Jobo tank with at least 1 liter of developer. 4x5 for sure. Everything else too. 4 gallons of each works out to over 600 80 sq. in units of film. That is a lifetime. I may need to find someone to split this with me.

Where do you buy 777?

Can you tell me where you got your 777? I used to use it in the 1960's when it came pre-mixed in gallon bottles. I am trying to locate a source for it any form.
