Paper recommendations for Canon 9500 II

I've used Canon's platinum gloss and thought it was a bit lackluster, a little over glossy, and whited out the image some. I do like Photo Paper Plus Gloss II quite a bit though, and for the money it really can't be beat. I've also had good results with Museo silver rag and awful results with Moab Photo Matte 235 (in 5x7 which for whatever reason it won't adjust the print settings for). It was so flat, yuck.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good paper? I like my papers to feel like fiber paper, or for color like glossy paper. But for exhibition and portfolio I feel like I could be missing something, and I don't have time or money to test them all!

My feeling about papers are, whats the point of a strong texture if it's going to end up under glass. I don't really care how nice a paper feels in the hand, I think of how it looks on the wall or in a portfolio. I don't want a paper getting in the way of my content. That's why I never really used matte fiber paper in the darkroom.

So anything I should try?

Hi. I've been using RedRiver Glossy Arctic White on my Canon 9500 II and have been getting great results. I did have to download the printer/paper profile from RedRiver, and then change the settinngs in the Canon Printer Preferences so that the color is managed by the printer. You can buy a sample box of paper from RedRiver with different finishes. Just remember to download the correct printer/paper profile for the different paper, and to have the color managed by the printer. (Turn off all Auto color settiings.)

BTW, I usually print from Lightroom 3.0

I use Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta paper with the 9500II with great results. I also want to try Photo Rag later on. Btw, I use this mostly for my B&W scanned pictures. This is avaailable at BH and other online stores.

Really tough because asking for a paper recommendation is like asking for a film recommendation. There is a good reason there are so many out there, each with it's devotees.

I consistently use 3 papers. One I have used for proofing for over ten years. One I have used for exhibition prints for over six years. The other for exhibition prints for over four years. There are about 15-20 others I have tried over the years. Many love some of the ones I tried but do not use now.

But that is what works for my eye. Specific names would mean no more to you than the one film I use or my favorite focal length lens.

I do think papers are like films. You need to pick one and use it consistently for long enough so you understand it. Then if still are things you wish were different, you can search for a new product that meets those parameters.

I would recommend a standard paper for you to use consistently except you seem to prefer the papers with a glossy surface and I use matte 100% of the time.

Why not get a few of those sample packs ?
I just bought an epson r1900, and have been burning through sample packs in the effort to find the paper I like.

Just noticed this thread. I have 2 pro9500II printers. At first I tried a number of different paper types. Then spoke to one of the gurus at Canon, on colour management, and he suggested using Photo Paper Plus Semi Gloss, or Satin. This works brilliantly. He also suggested using the Canon proplugin in CS5. I did previously bypass the plugin, and PS print engine.

This work very well.

I recommend, by the way Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. Cheap, great glossy paper. My color work sings on it, and it looks super sharp!

Hmmm I tried to get proplugin to work in CS5 and no such luck. It wouldn't install and it seemed like it was only supported to CS3?! How did you get it running?

We got alot of questions about this printer while I was working at Canon. The pigment ink is not made for glossy papers.

Try the Canon FA PM (premium matte) for BW, and the Semi Gloss for color, these papers work really well with the 9500 (mk II).
