Paralyzed by rain

Plastic bags, and a lens hood. Weekly thing for me.

Michigan is really wet in the spring, and when it storms here... well your best bet is to find shelter and a cold beer.

Michigan Photographer, more beer than photos!

How does everybody handle situations like this? Are we simply screwed as film photographers because we haven't got the latest weather-sealing tech in our camera's? Or am I being too cautious?

What are you talking about? Plenty of sealed film gear.
EOS 3 and 50L, I had this for rain, but it was too bulky.
Now I have Konica-off road with high-quality wide prime on it. I took it with me on boat run this weekend. Where are other advanced P&S with great optics in them. Like Muji from Oly.
Single use cameras which are suitable for diving are still available as well. ;)

Tijmen, you probably wouldn't have done much better in The Netherlands either, those 18 days in Iceland we had north-western wind so all your rain showers ended up here...

Towels are nice, but I prefer the leather rag you use to clean windows with. Google translate says it's called a 'shammy' in English. Stretchy, soaks up water real easy and retains less water than a towel. In Dutch it's called a 'zeem'.

Doesn't help much when the Vogons invade though, I give you that! :D

This shot was taken last weekend with my Nikonos II. It was raining pretty heavily at the time. I didn't stay outside for long!

I don't have a lot of photos in the rain but I do enjoy shooting in the rain.

The best solution to this problem is a nice P&S in the bag for rainy days. Or basically the backup P&S. Camera phone also works.

Johan,

Goed Idee! (thanks google translate)

It is called a shammy here in the states. That would work great as they ring out very quickly and are a bit more compact than a fluffy towel. I used to use them on my fathers car some years back. Should be available at a Wally-World or a car parts store.

Hi,

Rain can enhance some shots.

I set it up under an umbrella and when my glamorous assistant whipped the umbrella away( it was reflected in the raindrop) I got a lot of cold water down my neck.

Regards, David

I wouldn't use same towel for my body parts and cameras because of nature of sweat.

Chamois is what I use to squeegee developed film, just need to soak piece of chamois when start dev process to have it soft. Squeeze off excess water and gently wipe off water from hanging film strip. Need to wash it before first use to get out chemicals they use in manufacturing process.

It's not my gear that keeps me from shooting in the rain, it's that I just don't like being out in it and it kills my interest in shooting. If I can shoot from a covered vantage point, or have someone to hold a large umbrella over me, then I do it. Otherwise, on rainy days, unless there is some outdoor scene that truly comes to life in the rain, I tend to seek out indoor places to shoot, like markets, cafes, churches, museums...the list is long.

A Nikonos or a Nikon "Action Touch" PS Or, if you can find one,the old Spiratone Aqua Housing for SLR's-good down to about 40 feet need as I can recall.
