Paris in January - February 2017

I'm heading to Paris (the one in France, because someone will make the comment) at the end of the month and I'm looking for your insight on photography-related things to do and see during that time.

I've been maybe a dozen times by now, but never completely on my own time. I have a week and I want to visit as many galleries and exhibitions as I can. I have this list of galleries so far:

Masion Europeean de la Photographie
Les Douches
Le Bal
Cartier Bresson
Polka
Vu
Particuliere
In Camera

What other things can I check out between the 31st of January and the 6th of February? Anyone going to be around and care to meet up?

I can suggest restaurants

one for dinner, is Le Relais De L'entrecote - ( steak and fries, that's it )
another favorite for lunch, if you like Felafel is L'As Du Fellafel

Might I suggest taking/finding a copy of Julian Green's book 'Paris'. It's a very slim paperback, one page English, one page French!

Well... I hope winzenbourg has time to post about his experiences in Paris, because my family and I will be heading there around mid-May.

My wife and I were there a couple of times in the 90s for extended stays (1 month at a time), so we have a clear idea about how the city is. However, I need to know about a couple of practical details:

Where and how safe is it to exchange dollars for euros? Back then, there were banks and exchange bureaus (which charged a commission).

Anyone here used ATMs in Paris? I have used them in Germany and Spain, and expect them to work in France just as well... but one never knows.

My view is that your learn about photography the most by studying other arts. So consider Musee d'Orsay for Impressionists and Centre Georges Pompidou for an excellent review of modern art. If at Pompidou, drop by at Atelier Brancusi nearby. Brancusi used photography as a tool to aid his sculpture.

IdealCamera, I am guessing at the reason of your comment, and I agree. However, I have chosen to ignore it.

Elsewhere, I found that the best way to get cash is not through banks or exchange businesses but via ATMs. We intend to rent a small place and the owner wants payment in cold, hard cash (in the past I had been able to pay for these things with a credit card). And in euros to top it all! 😱 But fortunately, as I learned, it can be done.

Diverse or not, Paris is Paris... and it's our 25th anniversary, so we're going back this May! 🙂

The temporary ice-skating rinks should be out, which are always a good place for taking photos.

You'll be fine, and will have a great time. Don't worry about bringing any money over - just use ATM's for your euros - that's all my wife and I ever do. We were just there in November (and are going to be there again for a few days in June), and Paris is still fantastic. The only thing that bummed us out was the extra security at the Eiffel Tower (this was due to the recent terror incident). You couldn't just walk under the tower anymore without going through security. Other than that, the city was much the same.
