haveing been on ebay since 2002 , i was used to the old way of doing things .
the postal money order was the best payment and i received western union payments from some overseas buyers .
there was a service called bidpay where a buyer could pay and a western union money order was sent to the seller .

i purchased many cameras items most were very nice , some had problems and a few were in very bad condition . there was really no recourse the buyer had other than to leave bad feedback - often the seller of the junky item threatened bad feedback so you would keep the item and not give them a negative . in all these transactions were a small minority . and i would sell these items with an honest desciption at a loss .

now ebay has turned the card with the buyer in control . there are a minority that exploit this . the real change is that you have to take an item back if the buyer is in anyway dissatisfied . even with no returns clearly listed and as is in the description paypal and ebay can force you to take a return . all of us want the buyer to be happy , however you must realize that the buyers description of condition in a paypal return is perhaps nothing like the lens you shipped after the sale .

for the most part ebay transactions (sales) are as a system working well . a lot of sellers dropped international sales as ebay required you to ship to overseas unconfirmed addresses , it is not possible to confirm addresses in many areas outside the us and canada . they indicate if the buyer is verified it is ok . however you are still a seller like gander mountain or your local coffee shop , so there are chargecard chargebacks and other problems .

as 35 velux stated the most important part is shipping with a carrier that has tracking and delivery confirmation . also you need to value the item as full cost on customs forms . if lost in transit you are out the differance between sale price and insured value . i insist on express mail insured through the post office for anyone out of the us and priority mail insured with delivery confirmation in the us , i think there are some destinations where value is limited and a would not ship if i had a question about it .

well a couple items i wanted to write turned into a long screed .

Paypal is a nightmare. I canceled my ebay account when they required paypal. Avoid it at all costs - it is never worth it.

I've sold a lens a couple weeks ago to a person in Singapore, off ebay. I live in Brazil.

The options I saw were, besides Paypal, wire transfer and western union. WU has a killer fee, but you get access to the money instantly. Wire transfer takes a couple days to be done and depending on the amount the fee is not worth it. Paypal seemed to be the best option.

We agreed on the price and Monday evening I sent the email invoice, he paid me right away. As soon as the credit was made in my Paypal account, I transfered the sum to my bank account here in Brazil. Shipped the lens on tuesday afternoon though UPS, with signature confirmation and insurance on the lens' value. Wednesday I checked my bank account and the money had been credited. It worked quite fast.

For same country transactions Paypal is really not the best option, as a bank transfer will not have a fee like Paypal's, but for international ones it is quite helpful. It was the first time I used the service in that context and I was pleased with it.

I've also got a question, prefer Euros to answer due to possible differences in charges:

Are there fees involved in transfering money from PayPal balance to your bank account? Don't seem to find that anywhere, but wouldn't need to touch those funds if something like the usual 3% is charged. I actually assumed that money received would go straight to my credit card, but the money actually remains on PayPal account, with an option to transfer it to my bank (no CC card, strange). Anyone know about the fees?
