I know this was brought up before but I'd like your opinion about the safety of using PayPal to buy and sell items online. Reading some of the stories about buyer abuse and PayPal not being super supportive to sellers, I'm cautious of trying to sell some of the things I want to sell here and elsewhere. I want to be trusting of others and mostly am, but still...
Thanks for your thoughts.

My first advice is to be aware than when you sell using Paypal, in order to protect the buyers money, Paypal will hold the payment made to your account for sometime (at least it did to me on the few sales on ebay). Time ranged from 7-15 days. Some people arent aware of this when they try to sell and get mad because of this. I, for one, like this practice, because, as a buyer, my money is protected. Also, check the fees to see if you agree with them. They may seem too high for some.

Thanks to both of you. I've bought through PayPal here and had a good experience. I'm all for buyer protection but as a seller, I'm equally concerned. How do most people here deal with transactions, if not by PayPal?

I have been using PayPal for years without any problems whatsoever. They have even helped when I have had no response or problems from buyers and sellers alike. As far as RFF is concerned, I have both bought and sold here using PayPal. RFF member buyers and sellers I have found to be outstanding and trustworthy. I can only speak from my experience.

I Detest Paypal
now that I know the founder of Paypal
Peter Thiel
just Donated to the Trump campaign
1,250,000.00

Would not like my pennies being spent that way 😛

But what are the alternatives, especially for us "non-US" sellers? I have a chrome 35mm Summicron-M ASPH I'm looking to sell, but the hassle with PayPal is just not worth it.

Not to make this political, but I'm there with you Helen. The question remains how would you handle transactions? I know the RRF folk are good people, and I would want to do what would be fair to everyone.

Granted I have a Xpro1 for sale in the Classifieds
Once it sells I am closing my Paypal account in protest
Yes the Silly political gurl I am

Will look into other solutions
AMAZON PAY ...???

I've used paypal for many transactions over many years without significant issues. However, I have never considered paypal's protection policies anything other than a last resort for a problematic deal. I've always tried to be sure I'm comfortable with the person I'm dealing with regardless of how the cash changes hands.

Regarding the Thiel connection... I am in agreement with the sentiment, but I'm pretty sure that while he may be a founder, his ownership now is at best a small minority interest.

I'm not sure Peter Thiel has any meaningful continuing connection to PayPal. "Meaningful" in the sense that he benefits financially from PayPal success to a greater degree than any random person off the street does. Since the days of its founding, PayPal has gone public, been acquired by ebay, and been spun off by ebay. Thiel is not listed here:

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/PYPL/holders?ltr=1

as a major direct shareholder. He may well have a significant financial interest in it (or he may have none at all) but the fact that he was a founder has little current significance.

Dear Jhutchins

I do wish I could feel less revolted by Mr Thiel's use of his $$
accumalted probably thru each and everyone iof us

I do believe he has 'Power' to Influence
A Billionaire, his fingers in the early days of Facebook, still on the board of Facebook, Y Combinator , Founding Partner Paypal
hedge fund Extraordinaire OR shall I say Economic Hitman
Claims to be raised in the Evangelical spirit but panders to Mr 'Pussy Grabber' himself

sounds rather Cheap and Sordid to me

I will probably get in Trouble now for 'Politics' here on my Favorite Photog website so I shall be Quiet ..,

Thank You for listening 😉

Benlee, I'm not familiar with email bank transfers. Easy to do?
Helen, nothing has been more divisive than this election, and I've taken my share of heat from sharing my perspective. I've quit buying from a number of places on principle, my choice. How could I not feel your pain, you share my daughter's name.

Very easy. Banks in Canada are connected via a company called Interac. All you need is an email address and an account at a participating bank. $1.50 per transfer.
