Doesn't eBay require you to have PayPal? If you don't use PayPal, for whatever reason, can you still use eBay?

buyers can and do pull dishonest tricks like claiming an item is damaged as received not as described. There is a percent of time it happens so you do what stores do, raise prices to cover shoplifting.
I bought a nice plain prism Nikon F2 from Japan. $200 risk that panned out.
I guess you need a certain risk level you are willing to accept for buying and selling.

I guess that the moment you step into online sell/buying, you are taking some calculated risks. I've been using Paypal for about 10 years or so and never have a significant issue.
I live in Mexico. Ive been dealing with people in Russian, China,Japan,USA,etc. through ebay and with paypal alone. If you are doing business with someone on the same country, I think bank transfer would work. Otherwise, I will suggest paypal for a more hassle-free transaction.
Just my 2 cents.

Paypal has been a client of mine for some time and unless I am mistaken, Mr Thiel is no longer in any decision-making capacity with the company.
Having said that, I might question the business acumen of anyone who made that kind of seven-figure "investment"! 🙁

For non-US buyers, PP's currency conversion rates suck, plus they charge 4% instead of 3% - but as others have said often there's no alternative, though selling to the US I prefer USPSMO's

used paypal to purchase a camera that turned out not to be as described - didn't work! i traded emails with the seller who would do nothing - all but said, "tough luck"
upon contacting paypal and describing the problem, they told me to return the camera to seller - they would contact him.
bottom line, 7 days later they credited my account the full purchase price plus the return postage. all painless and found them helpful.
having said that - yes the fees are high; i don't like thiels politics, and cannot support his perfidy and will find an alternative for any future purchases.
