Having some fun with an Olympus E-PL1 and a Skink Pinhole lens (for FourThirds SLR adapted with a dumb mount adapter), fitted with f/71 Zone Plate:

Most of these were ISO 1600-3200, with exposure times in the 1/8 to 2.5 seconds range. Hand-held camera.

Square format chosen in camera, so 13x13mm, and processed in Lightroom 4.4RC.

Thanks for looking! Comments appreciated.

I like the self portrait. A lot. I have a Skink for my G1, but my results were comparatively meh. Now I want to play like you're doing here. This feels like channeling Man Ray. The possibilities for angular abstraction are intriguing in the others esp #3, though the shot of the palm/roofline has a certain 'glaucoma nostalgia' vibe. Let's see more.

I like that ... "channeling Man Ray". 🙂

I tried the f/217 pinhole disk and it's a bit too slow for my druthers, and a bit too sharp. The f/47 zone plate on this pinhole setup is a bit too soft in its rendering. The f/71 zone plate seems just right. There's detail but lots of softness, and I can hand hold it.

It takes some time to acquire the eye for what works well with pinhole-zone plate shooting. I'm beginning to see in the capture medium now. I'll carry this camera again tomorrow. 🙂

That last one, that portrait, at that size on my monitor, it's frightening; it looks like big brother's watching me through a telescreen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telescreen).. So, 10 out of 10 for that one.

On the technical side, I'm amazed at what you can pull out of such a small sensor with a pinhole. And even more so considering you've cropped to square. My own efforts on anything smaller than 6x6 have been.. well, let's call them unremarkable. But these give me incentive to try again; thanks for showing them!

Very nice effects - I favor soft images a lot (actually use filters on the lens often). Never heard of Skink until now. Went to their website - very interesting.

1. I assume the noise is due to the high ISO, not due to long exposure ?

2. What do you see in the viewfinder (or LCD) ?

Both. ... I'm running at ISO1600-3200 and exposure times from 1/8 to 2.5 secs, and still underexposing by 3-2 stops. 2sec or so is as long as I can hold the camera still enough for the results I want.

Many times the LCD or EVF is just black. Ya gotta guess. Luckily, there's no focusing.

More Skinkery with the Oly E-PL1:

Olympus E-PL1 + Skink fitted with f/71 Zone Plate

It takes a while to see what a particular lens sees. I'm still learning...
Thanks for looking. Comments always appreciated.

Good timing, I just logged in . . .

I figured out what attracts me to this style - it's that I really like the absence of details !

In retrospect, I have been mucking about making some of my photos . . . um . . . un-detailed, or vague, or impressionistic, by post-processing.

The absence of details makes you see the larger scheme of the images, I feel.

Thanks!

Working with photos like this gives you a different view of the world: simpler, more engaged with form and balance, the nuances of their interaction. Some things work really well with this kind of presentation. Others do not.

Still learning ... 🙂

very nice! I have a cctv 25/1.4 on my epl1 that manually closes completely shut, I think I will calculate f71 and see what I can come up with!
