Pen E-P1 file naming problem?

Dear all,
after some time off the world of internet forums, I am back to ask a question.

I have a solid Olympus digital Pen E-P1 camera and it does pretty well so far (after a visit to the customer service). However, now it is overwriting older photo files with newer photo files, because it gives the same name or adds a 2 at it (or better: I have that on my Macbook).

How can I cope with it/solve this problem?


Also for the Mac-people: How can I access the old files which are now whitened out by the Mac OS X (El Capitan)?

If you download to a computer all images from your E-P1 after the memory card is nearly filled, followed by formating the card in the camera, this should remove any old files.

I have an EP-2, I think it is similar.

Go to the menu, gear symbol. On my EP-2, file naming in under gear menu "H", file naming.

Then look for Edit / Fiile names. Input a custom file name, such as Florian followed by a number sequence.

Also, if you are always downloading to your Mac into the same exact folder, this could eventually cause overwriting issues. I make a new folder for each day's download.

If it is same camera and lens, I add a letter or number to the names of the images from a new download. If I started one day with files named LUX_EP2, then a follow-up download on some other day may be LUX_EP2x, say.

I too keep each batch on the computer in a separate folder, but also routinely change the filenames to a configuration of my preference, making it easier to find stuff later...

For recurring tasks, A Better Finder Rename allows you to save common settings to droplet mini-applications and apply them automatically to all files dropped upon them. And you can save and restore presets to facilitate the creation of your own renaming library.
