Here's a recent blog thing about overhauling the shift mechanism on a Pentax 28mm Shift lens.

Once you open it up, the actual mechanism is pretty obvious. As you rotate the dial (which goes to 11- love it!), the grooves in the dial plate push the shift plate to one side, guided by the bushings that travel in two linear grooves. Someone at some point in time had done a bit of a hack to replace the screw for one bushing, causing the plate to rinde along a metal screw head. Also the bushings had worn and were loose in the grooves.

Well, I hope this is helpful if someone runs across this lens for a steal but finds it sloppy. Anyone been inside other shift lenses? Is the Pentax mechanism 'typical' in any way?

I have one that had been hacked to Canon EF mount, thankfully it came with the original Pentax K mount and I was able to restore it, but had to work hard to get some of the right metric screws.
