I recently picked up a nice Asahi Pentax H2 locally from the original owner. Came with the Auto-Takumar 55 f2 and hood. 1961 vintage which is my birth year so I could not pass it up. They are such nice looking bodies and seem to be very nicely built. The seller included all the original sales brochures, owner's manual, etc. which is an interesting read in itself.

Will all M42 lenses work with it? I read that the 50/1.4's (or at least some) are a problem. Any recommendations for some other lenses that I should try? I am not looking to go longer than 85mm and a 35 or 28 would probably be my next focal length to add. I do like my 50's so any stellar ones out there?

35mm f/3.5 S-M-C Takumar, that could be had for $60-80 could produce this 😉

Great to know about the 50/1.4 's. I've only put two rolls through it so far but it is a pleasure to use. Definitely something nostalgic about the whole experience. It's hard to believe that $60 can deliver that kind of IQ. That really is impressive bang for the buck Sam.

Thank You.I think all screwmount pentax Taks are phenomenal lenses. You would love them. SMC ones will give you higher contrast and will seem sharper, but I prefer lower contrast on film, so I love them all.

I have a modest compliment of M42 stuff and pretty much all of the common lenses are great. I prefer the build and feel to any of my Nikon stuff, and image quality is easily on par with any similar Nikon offerring IMO. I regularly use a 28/3.5, 35/3.5 50/1.4 and a 105 2.8. The latter may be my absolute favorite.

eurekaiv - I have all the lenses you just mentioned, and yes, the 105/2.8 is a seriously fine lens. Also, the 35/3.5, which nobody wants because it's so slow, is another sleeper. I have been using Pentax cameras and lenses since 1964 and still have - and use - a beat up and brassy black SP. My favorite camera body. I also have two non-black SP's. All three have been to Eric Hendrickson for CLA's.

My first Pentax was an H1a; then I got an H3v, then went to Spotmatics.

Current lenses are: 28/3.5, 35/3.5, 50/1.4, 50/4 macro, 55/2, 105/2.8, 300/4, and a very good Vivitar 200/2.5. I had the Super Takumar 135/2.5 but it was heavy. I found myself using the 105/2.8 instead most of the time, so I sold the 135.

I believe the Pentax M42 lenses are as good as anything out there.

Well, I do own S-M-C 35mm f/3.5, 8 element 50mm f/1.4 Super Tak, SMC 50mm f/1.4, SMC 85mm f/1.9 105mm f/2.8 and 135mm f/3.5 Auto Tak. Also, I have 55mm f/1.8 and 55mm f/2 mounted on H3 and H1a.I think my favorites are 35mm f/3.5 and 8 element 50mm f/1.4 ST. Wonderful IQ!! Highly recommended.
Also, I used to own 28mm f/3.5, 20mm f/3.5, 35mm f/2 SMC, 135mm f/3.5 ST and 50mm f/1.4 7 element ST. Liked 50mm, 35mm f/2 sold to get 35mm f/2 M.

Get them all! They are all worth it.

I think you are right there is something about certain 50 1.4s that is problematic with very early pentaxes but I cannot recall the details.

I own several of these "pre-Spotmatic" cameras. To my way of thinking they are one of the prettiest classic SLRs. In fact they remind me of the Leica screw mount cameras in the hand (with the obvious addition of a pentaprism).

As to lenses, basically you cannot go wrong with any takumar, super takumar, smc takumar etc lens.

I happen to like using the very early ones that match the camera. The preset longer lenses (105 and 135) and the semi auto takumars that have to be cocked before using are interesting lenses.

My favourites would have to be any of the 50s (f1.8/f2.0 and f2.2). All perfrom well but the later f1.8 is stellar and has lovely bokeh.

The 105mm (all of variants are superb if you want a nice and fairly cheap portrait lens - these go for less than the 85mms.

In the 35mm range you cannot go wrong with the 35mm f3.5 but if you find a nice f2 35mm then grab that as well. Both are excellent. As I might add is the 28mm f3.5.

Most of these lenses went thru a few versions (most later lenses have 49mm filters. Some early ones had 46mm and a few had 58mm but later reverted to 49mm) and I have never been disappointed with any of them even though some of the later ones are probably technically better (multicoating etc) They are just bloody good lenses. Bear in mind they do not have excellent flatness wide open of field so are better in the centre than on the edge (as you would expect from a consumer lens.) But having said that they do tend to be very sharp in the centre.

Here is a photo I took a few years back - essentially a candid shot of a stranger on a bus. Taken with a 105mm (I do not recall which version but have a sneaking feeling it was an early preset one as I recall I used it on a digital camera with adapter and the preset works well in that situation so thats the one I mainly used) I would say this is more or less what you can expect from any takumar lens of this era. If I said I had shot this with Leica glass I would be surprised if anyone said it were not. The colour, the rendering, the sharpenss is spot on.

The problem only exists with 50mm f/1.4 8 element version and H2, H3,etc bodies, before they were adjusted. It has to do with rear element protruding too far inside the camera, and being hit by the mirror. And 8 element 50mm Super Tak is the original Planar killer.

Everyone has their favorite lens recommendations but the neat thing about the M42 mount is that there are a plthora of interesting lenses in this mount and most are easily obtainable and affordable. These bodies are well made and rugged and moderately compact. Have fun!

I have managed to put together a nice three lens kit for my H2. Just picked up a SMC 28/3.5 and Super Takumar 105/2.8 to go with the original Auto-Takumar 55/2. I am very pleased with all three. As for the H2 itself, it's a pleasure to shoot with. Since returning from a service by Erik Hendrickson it's smooth as silk.

Now, what should be the next lens on my list? For some reason the 35/2 Takumar is calling out to me.

Pismo - do you have the clip-on meter for your HV ?

I have several SPs and a very nice SV-1a; i think they are wonderful cameras, and you can't go wrong with the Takumar lenses...

Regards,

LF

Hi Frank. I use a handheld meter rather than the clip on. I am getting good exposures for the most part and slowly learning how to judge light and exposure in my head. Great way to shoot when you have time and just want to relax and enjoy the process.

My favorite M42 standard lens is the Yashinon 2/50. But it is not much different really, performance wise than the Tak 2/55 you already have.

This site ( http://www.taunusreiter.de/Cameras/Pentax_Main.html ) has a lot of info on early Asahi equipment, bodies and lenses.

I would caution any user of pre-Spotmatic bodies to be very cautious when using large heavy lenses (read: 1970s vintage tele-zooms and similar). The lens mount on the earlier bodies is not rugged. The body flange is attached only to the stamped brass housing around the mirror box and not to a heavy casting. If you limit yourself to nothing larger than a Tak 200mm f/4 you should be fine. If you use larger, heavier lenses be certain to hold the camera by the lens and not the body.

I love the SV and they are cheap as chips (couldnt sell my SV fo $30, in working condition)
Beautiful to look at, beautiful to play with
