Made these two acquisitions recently and boy are they hot! I really enjoy these two but at this point seem to favor the MX in hand. Thanks to all who helped me chose the MX. I'm sure glad I listened. The FG is no slouch either and is probably the better looking of the two, it is silver and I kinda wish I had gotten the silver Pentax but I do like it in black. Anyway, I'm pretty jazzed up about both and soon as I get some photos back I'll post.

Both are excellent! I favour the FG because of all the other Nikons and nikkors I have. I like aperture priority in a casual camera.

Congrats,

they are both good cameras. I had the FG's little sister - the FG-20 - as my first camera and used it for many, many years.
The MX of course was more upper end amateur/professional, in the direction of Nikon's FM2.

The MX has one of the best meter readouts ever, in my opinion. Where the FM2 spreads the shutter speeds and the meter itself out into different corners of the screen, the MX has it combined in one place. Plus the color coding (red, orange, green) allowed one to take well-exposed pictures by just peripherally glancing. The cloth shutter is very silent, but the mirror quite loud (I had three samples).
A tip: the Pentax 1.7 50mm M is a very, very good lens. Small, well built, very sharp, very good flare control. Only drawback is the hexagonal shape of the iris.

Greetings, Ljós

I remeber getting my first MX in 81/2, love the mx my all time favorite slr, a small package especially when you combine it with a 40/2.8

I'm the original owner of two black MX's (plus winders)from the early 80's...I also had a black Nikon FG but traded it along with two other Pentax MG cameras for a like new Yashicamat 124g...
Love the MX's...even bought one for our daughter in chrome...
The MX was a top leader in it's time and still today is a great camera to use...
