Pentax PC35AF - First Roll

Hey All,

I got my first roll back from my Pentax PC35AF and I have to say that I am very disappointed. ...

What's wrong with these photos? I quite like them :)

I just found a PCAF35AF Date today. I've been looking for one for ages now. The shop told me they don't buy them so I guess I lucked out.

Thank you for the positive comment on the pictures. It looks like I have broken the link though. I cropped out the roof at the bottom of the second picture. I should have done this originally, but I was respecting the "authenticity" of the camera's view (whatever that means). :D

And congrats on finding the camera. I know that it was a bit of a search for the right one for myself. I'll definitally be shooting it again; right after I finish the roll in my Hi-Matic F, another great compact camera.

I ran a roll of Tri-X 400 through it as soon as I got it out of the shop (developed in HC-110.) I like this camera :) The AF sounds like a Canon 35AF or a Nikon L35, but I like the manual advance and rewind (less to break, I guess.)

I've seen a few on auctions for $10 a piece, but they're usually pretty grubby

You should get a RED XA2 too, they appear on auctions quite often :)

Hi btgc, I do have a soft spot for the red cameras. Aren't they just gorgeous!
As far as I know, for PC35AF there exisits a silver variation, too.

I remember seeing one Camouflage PC35AF on the auction site long ago, then started checking carefully to see if the thing is for real...
Such a crazy pattern for a camera!

the vignetting in the pictures don't come from the lens but from the central shutter/aperture. I can see it on my expensive T2 and T3 too. When shooting in a bright desertlike environment it can't match the light, it overexposes. The shutter speed is too slow. More in center because of the construction of the shutter. A curtain shutter never has this problem (but others...). Go ISO 100 or even 50 here.

Hey guys

I'll refresh this thread a bit - I just got my PC35AF (non-M) with a stuck shutter button, but otherwise in perfect condition. I wanted to unlock the release, but I cannot take the front part of the top cover of - is it screwed somewhere under the sliding face of the camera? How to take that off? I'll be thankful for all your help.

Thanks
Wojtek

Thanks man - I've found this myself, but if you'll look closely, then you'll notice that only the back part of the top cover was removed. To unstuck the button I need to remove the front, too. And this is the trouble part...

Have you managed to do it?

wojtek, you are right, I stand corrected.
Release button on mine sometimes comes back out a bit lazy, but don't get stuck. This nice camera has some design issues. I haven't tried to open whole top cover, so can not really help.

:(

I've been sitting with it for nearly an hour today and I still cannot figure out how to take the damn cover off. I think it may be the screw holding the handstrap, but I am not sure as it isn't really related to the shell...

Anyone?

Ok. Problem "solved". There were three screws inside the film chamber which I haven't noticed before. Unfortunately, it seems like someone has been messing with the shutter release before - as there are some parts missing from the internals. Oh well. I got it for free, so it'll serve as an organ donor for small screws and springs. :)

Thanks guys.

I just bought one of these for $1.00/free shipping on that popular auction site. Well, actually $11.00, but I had a $10 coupon that I had to use, so I took a flyer. I wish it was the red one, though, I haven't had a red camera since I sold my Canon Snappy S.

Since I do most of my shooting in daylight, it looks like this camera may be right in my wheelhouse. And it gets me one step closer to my ultimate goal of owning every AF P&S camera ever produced. Or at least it seems that way to me, I am a little addicted to the chunky old plastic fantastic cameras. But they are cheaper than heroin, at least. And I don't have to wear long sleeves in the summertime when I am "using".

Did Pentax make red PC35AF? I knew about XA2. I've seen marine-colored PC35AF, that would be fun :)

I received my PC35AF-M today, and surprisingly, it is in working condition. When I popped open the battery chamber, there were two badly corroded AA's inside, so bad that I had to pry them out with a pair of pliers, and remove most of the spewage with a small screwdriver. After vigorously scrubbing the contacts with vinegar, I popped in a fresh pair, expecting the worst. But I was very pleasantly surprised when the camera (and flash) sprang to life. I had never had similar success with a camera that had that much corrosion before, perhaps Pentax contacts are more robust than those of my paperweight Konicas, Minoltas, and Yashicas?

That would be true, if this camera used lithium cells. It takes 2xAA cells.

Yes, that's why I regret Pentax didn't make lithium-cell version of PC35AF, like Ricoh did with FF-70/90 and FF-700/90 Super versions.

Both Pentax and Ricoh were and are companies driven by techno-geaks, they know how to make great stuff.
