Um, yeah. But I can't help thinking that, like a lot of artistic gurus, he benefitted hugely by being in the right place at the right time with the right line of B.S.
To put it more bluntly, if he had been a conservative Republican and/or had taught at, say, the University of Wyoming instead of funky Hampshire College, nobody would be writing paens to him in the New York Times no matter how talented and inspirational he was.
