Are these two film developers pretty much the same? Are they interchangeable w.r.t. Time/Temp for a given flim?

I did check the chart and saw that the times were close but a bit different. However in "The Film Developing Cookbook" the were said to be equivalent developers! Hence my question - perceptol=microdol-x?

Quoting from page 70 of the "Film Developing Cookbook":

"Ilford Perceptol is formulated to be used at the same dilutions and times as Microdol-X. It has some working properties in common with Microdol-X, is marketed as an equivalent, and appears to be chemically close to Microdol-X."

So why not try it and see? ID-11 is basically Ilford's answer to Kodak's D-76 so why not Perceptol as the Ilford answer to Microdol-X?

Perceptol and Microdol are both super fine grain, metol-based developers with high sulfite content. So in that sense they are "equivalents," but not the same.

They are very similar in result, which is the important part in the end.

Some people speculate they are the same, others point out that one is a one-part, the other two-part, and on the Contax or Rollei list (cannot remember which) one person INSISTED they were not the same, though many say when you cannot get one use the other, which goes back to the first point.

HP5+ in Perceptol 1:3 can be beautiful.

thanks for the responses. I will asume thaty they arte the same for Pan-F.
The perceptol would cost $28.00 usd per gal while the microdol-x would be around $8.oo per gal. Hence my question!!!
