Can anyone recommend a competent (and hopefully reasonable) person/firm in the US to CLA my Canon P? Thanks...
 
I have had a good experience with several Canons sent to DAG. Reasonable prices, 2 to 3 months turnaround time, and quality work. Also had one camera CLA'd by Essex camera, and was pleased with the results.

But humor me... I'm just getting back into rangefinders after a 40 year hiatus. Who/what is 'DAG'. And perhaps a link?

Just had Mark Hamma in Georgia do a CLA on my P. Basic charge was $145. Also sent him a lens to remove fungys and charge for it was $45. Took about a week for everything. You can find his contact info by doing a Google for Mark Hamma.

Mark Hama did a CLA on my Canon P in 2006, and my experience w/ him falls in between that of Mr Philip and ChrisN. He had my camera, all toll, for about 5 months., despite advising me before I sent the camera to him that the turnaround time would be a couple of weeks. During that 5 month period, I found him very difficult to communicate w/, unresponsive to my inquiries, and when he initially returned the camera to me I had to send it back to him to fix a squeeking film advance that should have been fixed the first time. At the end of the day, however, the camera works beautifully, and is now as quiet as an M2. I think what you'll discover is that individual experiences w/ Mark Hama have varied widely.

I've also had Don Goldberg (DAG) do a repair on my P, and I would not hesitate to recommend him, although I have not actually used him for a CLA. Nevertheless, he is one of the top repairmen/restorers of Canon rfs as well as Leicas.
 
I've had two camera's cla'd by Mark Hama. Took about 6 months as well...even though I was promised a two week turn around. Had to return one of them back to him due to bad light metering. All in all, they worked great when I got them back.
 
I used Mark Hama to do a CLA for my 14E and he did great work and returned the camera as promised.

I would like to throw another name into the ring, however. Southern Exposure Camera Repair replaced the shutter curtain on my Canon IIB and did a first rate job. Their info is below:

Youxin Ye -- wye7@yahoo.com -- is another person to consider. He is quick and not so expensive. However, he once told me that Canons are difficult to work on because of their aluminium parts, which become brittle and therefore are prone to break.

Thanks payasam. But just as a point of information for anyone looking for a CLA on Canon, I had an email from Youxin Ye in which he says that he now only works on 'classic' Leicas. :mad:

I sent my 35/2 Canon to Sherry Krauter, had been given an estimate online within a day of inquiring.

All I asked for was general tightening and lube.

What I got, for the quoted price, was a complete CLA including adjustment of element positions per Canon specs. This took just under two weeks. It went as a good lens, it came back as a better lens.

I'm very pleased.
