There is a lot of substandard film B&W work too. Good black and white is a product of effort, not medium. How many people denigrating digital black and white have spent serious effort developing techniques for digital processing before they render their negative verdict? I've spent years improving my workflow. I'm about 80% satisfied, but always working to make it better.
I adore black and white film, shoot much of it. But I spend just as much time working on those images as I do a digitally-originated image. If I left it up to the celluloid strip, I'd have a bunch of gray porridge images.
