The best camera is one that still works!
It's kind of bizarre to see something like this on a modern digital SLR ... but whatever floats your boat I guess ... and they'll probably sell heaps of them.
It also allows Lomography to rope in some money from the digital crowd so it's a smart business move on their part.

Speaking of interesting looking out of focus areas in photos,
The former FSU Helios 40-2 f1.5 85mm lens is also being re produced in small quantities in Russia.

i seriously lol'd when they said that. however russian glass has caught the eye of many enthusiasts, when really it's just weird lens engineering.

Most of the target consumers for this stuff has never seen a real Petzval lens. It looks weird and exotic to them.

Not really my cup of tea. The OOF effects are a bit over the top. Nice in focus image and colour though.

Given how much interest petzvals have been getting the last few years - and the price they fetch - this isn't a bad deal. The multi coating is an interesting decision.
It would be cool to see Lomography dabble in better built ideas like this. Most of their offerings arent very compelling to me. Experiments like this - particularly if the build quality is significantly higher - could make them much more interesting in the future.

Oh my,
You can buy a box of those old folder lenses from ebay that are removed from their original bodies.
Stick one of these on an extension tube with the mount that you want to use, EF, F, Pentax K, Hasselblad, whatever, and there you go, instant portrait with lots of "petzval" bokeh and swirly effects. Use your feet to focus, and forget about infinity, but you don't care about that for the type of photography that the video suggested anyway.
TIP: For more gentle effects -- and in my eyes, more beautiful, use a real medium format cameras, I use my Bronica S which allows me to focus using the camera, not my feet.
If I have access to a Pentax 645 Digital, I would use that.
No need to go to the trouble these people are putting themselves... unless you *have* to have a brass cylinder in front of your camera.

Petzval app, as in software? I suppose when the Leica Summicron and Jupiter 3 app come out...
But seriously, Petzvals are a wonderful design, used by portrait photographers for almost 100 years before 35mm came out. They don't all exhibit swirls, and don't need to, depending on how you shoot. Well made, they are extremely sharp in the middle, which allowed them to be used in a lot of early large telescope observatories.
I use and sell a LOT of vintage petzvals for LF. Here is a flickr site of Petzval photos I started a few years ago, there are now over 500 photographers! http://www.flickr.com/groups/868027@N25/

I just posted about this in the other thread. I don't know which of these two is the official thread. But the lens is now available outside of Kickstarter for pre-orders for $600-700 depending on if you get Brass or Black.

Kickstarter Petzval lens - ONLY 9 days left!
Kickstarter Petzval lens - ONLY 9 days left!
I've decided to back this project. I think this lens will be great on my Hasselblad 201F. I'm working on a series of B&W portraits called "Dreams and Memories", and the Petzval look will work for it.
It's very difficult (and expensive) to find a suitable vintage Petzval lens appropriate for 6x6 format, and then to have it adapted to Hasselblad mount.
So the price of this lens (if it comes to light) is quite fair in my opinion.
I wish Denys Ivanichek ("Retrospective" here on RFF) all the luck and interest in his project.
Merry Christmas all!
