Philip Jones Griffiths - this is the "drive."

Here's a guy I didn't know a whole lot about - Griffiths. He succumbed to cancer this year, but if you've never seen his work, start looking for it - some brilliant photojournlism - Magnum guy. He made his name in Vietnam - his photographs helped to turn the tide of U.S. public opinion against involvement in Vietnam. He had a full career beyond that as well, documenting the oppressed and voiceless. His work is gritty, on the ground with the people - the edges are rough.

In light of recent discussions here on RFF regarding "success," I found his story inspiring, having started his career as a pharmacist. The key for him being able to break out of his boring job, as with all of those who succeed at anything, was hard work - the "drive." I think some may be able to relate to needing to take action out of boredom as Griffiths relates in the interview.

I was fortunate to know and be able to call Philip a friend, having met and worked with him in Southeast Asia in the mid 90's. He had a big heart. I was thrilled when Vietnam Inc. was republished in 2001 (I was born the year it was first published, 1971, and it was long out of print). I think you can still get it now. Buy it and read his extensive captions too.
