Photo Expo NYC Javits center - udpates anyone?

on the train heading home. the m 8 is for real. slightly larger than an mp/m7, but a true leica in all ways.
free film from kodak, many show specials for those buying. it is more a look and see show. no new product introduction.

Surprisingly I think the show is smaller this year than when I went 2 years ago with Huck Finn.

Ok, Leica had a nice booth, all the fun stuff, M8 is very nice. A modest representation.

Zeiss, really poor showing, a little table in the back, very small.

There is this new thing, digital, it is taking over. 😉

Canon, Nikon, Fuji all had a huge presence. As did Epson, HP, Kodak too, but down a notch. Ilford was there, nice to see a featured monochrome booth. Medium format, Mamiya was there as was Hasselblad, much more subdued than two years ago.

Printers, color management, image processing........I never knew there were so many different choices. More of these guys than anyone else I think.

Show specials, well you can catch a shuttle right to B&H or Adorama. The retailers had special show pricing. Accessory manufacturers and rep were offering show specials, backdrops, reflectors, lighting, publications. No show specials from the hardware folks. The Canons and Nikons of the world had their Pro photogs on hand to demo their products, and there are tons of seminars to attend for a price.

I have size envy. I have been saving for a DSLR and went to Canon to see the 30D and 17-55/2.8 IS EFS lens. Oh my god!!!!! the lens is bigger than my M6 with 35 attached. I don't know if I can do it.

For you guys reading the P&S thread, I played with the Canon SD800IS and Fuji F30/31fd. Very nice tiny cameras. The Canon G7 is pretty sexy in a RF way too. For those little P&S cams, I don't think you can go wrong with either if what you are looking for is something to slip into your pocket for quick grabs. They are tiny though, smaller than a deck of cards.

Walked around town, morning weather guy at GCT when I got there, Entertainment Tonight type chick stripping down to bra and panties in Times Square, the Naked Cowboy of course, subway entrances, street stuff, pictures to follow. A pretty mellow day for NYC I would have to say.

The retailers were offering show specials, B&H, Adorama, Unique Photo. Honestly I did not see any scanners (other than those at Nikon) as I didn't look too closely to the Epson set up. It really is not a retail show. I don't think you can walk in there and buy stuff, maybe some books. Kodak was giving away two rolls of film per person, Porta, no B&W. Fuji and Ilford had their film info there, but no samples. But, with your badge the retailers are happy to sell you stuff at their stores for their special prices. I didn't ask, maybe at Unique Photo you can order via the internet right from the show.

Now Canon, they don't have a booth, they have square footage. More than the footprint of my house I bet. Nikon's area is huge too as were a few others. Every Canon everything was there. Maybe a 25-30 foot glass case with 3 or 4 full sets of all their DSLR bodies, every lens. If you want to fit a lens to a body to handle the kit, just ask and you can play with it. It was a pretty crowded place. I am sure I saw the 50/1.2, but wasn't specifically looking at the L glass other than to notice all the people with their own Canon DSLRs hung around their necks trying to show their baby's the fancy glass.
