A philosopher, Prof. Claudia Card, who works in the area of ethics will be presenting a public lecture, titled "Evils and Inexcusable Wrongs."

My wife, a prof. at Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville), needs an image that will best convey this idea of evils and inexcusable wrongs. Prof. Card addresses very serious subjects: terrorism, torture, genocide. We are not looking for photos that actually depict these actions! The subject matter is dark enough already. Dr. Card talks about women and children who are in such circumstances, so one idea would be to have a photo that sort of evokes that theme. But we are open to any and all ideas.

So: does anyone have a photo they would be willing to allow for use to illustrate a university lecture? My wife is hoping to have a poster made.

Thanks!

Rob

So something symbolic?

Lange's photos are about social and economic situations which are bad for women and children. Card's topics are more geared toward directed personalized evil, where one person or group deliberately inflicts harm on another in order to gain something.

Here is an interview of Card from a couple years ago by The Progresive's Matthew Rothschild. It may inform your decision regarding suitable imagery.

Yes! That's the idea. We were looking at some photos by Dorothea Lange, especially the "Woman of the Plains," if I have the title right. She wanted "Migrant Mother" until she saw the other. We'd like to know about the copyright issues.

How does that relate to:

Prof. Card addresses very serious subjects: terrorism, torture, genocide.

I think using Lange's work for your own goals is a philosophical question in itself. Maybe it is an "inexcusable wrong."
