Hello,

I don't know whether anybody thinks that this is a good idea, but I feel it could be beneficial to have a general photo post thread alongside the general discussion thread. We've got a great forum here and i think a dedicated photo thread is the only think that could make this forum even better.

It seems logical because rather than sifting through member galleries people could post their work for feedback and constructive criticism. To conserve bandwidth/server space(not sure on the correct terminology here) it would be wise to restrict the size/resolution of pictures posted. It may also be a good idea for people to perhaps use some kind of image host so that it doesn't the bandwidth of the forum.

I feel that it would be a good way for the members to benefit from the different ideas and approaches to photography that we all have and will more than likely motivate people to get out and take more pictures and share their work more often.

As much as I like talking about what gear we own or our dream buys, I think that there could be more emphasis on actually taking photos. Afterall isn't that why we got into photography in the first place?

I'm sure that most members are pretty active but there doesn't seem to be a thread to enable us to appreciate & critique other peoples work bar leaving a brief comment in that members gallery.

If anyone thinks this is a good idea then please say so, likewise if you think it's not a good idea then again leave your opinions. Hopefully the mods will act on the general consensus.

Cheers

there is a whole section in the gallery named 'rate my photo' or something like that.
i'm not sure of the popularity of it though.

i would think going to the gallery would be easier to find photos than sifting through a thread to find someone's work.

anyway, this would be jorge's call.

Thanks for the reply Joe, I felt that it would perhaps increase the popularity of sharing photo's if there was a specific thread to post work. It'd also be helpful for people to get feedback on their photo's and also appreciate other people's work & development.

In my opinion it'd be easier to keep up to date if there was a thread dedicated to this.
It'd be just like checking the discussion thread, except instead seeing what new or old shots people have posted.

Rather than rating it photo's it would mean that people can share their opinions, constructive criticism and even what techniques they have employed.

Although the gallery system is fairly straightforward to use I reckon that a thread like this would be more accessible and hopefully increase the community spirit. There seems to be a wealth of threads related to technique and equipment but nothing specifically for this purpose. I think that it would not have a detrimental effect on the running of the forum and plenty of benefits for people who want to share work.

I'd be interested to hear what other people think too, but like you say it's Jorge's call.

Regards

I guess I'd say we're already doing that, though not on one big dedicated thread. And someone has begun a couple of words/no words threads as used on Photo.net that would seem to fit the request too.

Hmm, might as well append a photo huh...

Not sure we need a thread for this. As Joe suggested, we have a section of the gallery dedicated to the seeking and giving of feedback ("Rate my photograph"). Each photo is easily seen in the normal gallery format (small image linked to a full image) and members can attach comments to provide advice/etc. Let's not dilute the system any further by not using the facility already provided. If there's a problem at all with the current approach, it might be that relatively few members regularly visit that section of the gallery, perhaps because we don't feel qualified to critique another members efforts. Personally I don't feel that photo critique is core business here, but then critique by others isn't high on my list of priorities! (I'm too sensitive!!! "How dare you criticise my favourite photo!!!") But I accept that critique is essential for people who seriously want to improve their photography.
