Canada, eh.
I'm noticing that photobucket degrades the quality of pictures that I want to share. They become pixelated when enlarging the image.

Anyone else noticing this, or is it something I'm doing wrong?

Is it better to use Flickr or tumblr?

Thanks

Photobucket is the worst. Anytime i'm linked to a photo bucket hosted photo i just close the window straight away rather than navigate through their little frame website and wait 20sec for the image to load.

Flickr does the same thing. Whenever you click on an image to view the image at full size file dimensions you can see the image soften as though flickr is applying a filter over the image. All my images look fine in the slideshow viewer but look horrible when expanded. Not impressed. I don't know if it's flickr's lame attempt at helping to protect user's images from piracy.

codester80, are you talking about clicking on it to enlarge or going to 'download this photo' > 'view all sizes'?

The later will give you the image at some fixed resolutions as well as the uploaded resolution.

Granted you are losing information as soon as you go to the jpg format - and then again when it is downsided to a smaller jpg. Most images online will have lost a bunch of fidelity before download. Hosting lossless images would be extremely expensive from a bandwidth standpoint and would be slow for those visiting the page.

Yeah, I use photobucket and it significantly degrades the quality of images.
But as I just use it to post snaps to internet forums, it does not really matter to me.

I should move on though. Gotta read the terms of use on the sites to make sure it does not give them permission to use my images in anyway they see fit. Like Facebook, Twitter, Linked In etc etc do.

Sorry should have specified clicking on an image to enlarge it. The download option works fine but is a pain in a** for viewing photos in a stream.

I just went to rpavish's flickr and I see he's uploaded full rez files so it seems the flickr engine isn't doing anything to his photos but if you upload smaller files (as I always do online) it seems flickr tries to up rez it a bit when you attempt to enlarge it but what ends up happening is you get only a slightly bigger image than the native file size and it goes noticeably soft. Not a big deal but it would be better if they just displayed the image at the native file size when clicking to enlarge.

Photobucket degrades life IMO .... horrible site! Nothing but ads and banners and a bloody awful interface.

I never experienced a degradation with Flickr-sometimes they are slow to load, and the picture will look bad until it finishes.

Take a look at 500PX, it's even a Canadian outfit!

+1 It was their interface and the continual change of it that drove me away. Use my own space now to store whatever I want.

+2. faintly remember using photobucket in last decade, for some sales pics. but nowadays dropbox is truly useful and handles this random need as well. for photo hosting online, flickr has served me well.
